    Grinding Gears in zf

I completed my swap a while ago and the car has been going great since with one exception.

I can sometimes feel some grinding/contact in the clutch pedal. With the pedal pressed I can sometimes feel what I would describe as a rotational contact between parts, generally this only happens when the car is moving and the trans is in gear while clutch pressed in. About a week or so ago it was pretty bad, the worst it had been, but then just went away.

I am running an S52 with an m20 flywheel and clutch and a zf 5 speed trans. I had the m20 stuff on hand when doing the swap so i used it. The clutch slave cyl is the zf part and the TOB must be the m20 part since i dont have any record of buying a new one.

Anyone have any ideas what could be rubbing? I also replaced the shift pins in the zf while I had it out. Obviously one solution is to swap in a proper flywheel and clutch, and that may happen eventually.

ok guess theres no one with ideas.

To add something, when i put the car in gear it gives a slight jump.

ie. in neutral, press clutch, move gear lever into first gear it will give a barely perceivable little move of the car

perhaps the TOB is not the right length for my setup

sounds like you need the 323 throwout bearing. Was your catch point really low to the floor before it started grinding?

It does sound like it's not fully disengaging, maybe it wore to the point that it isn't still slipping with the clutch all the way in?

Do you have a clutch stop/maybe adjusted too high?

yeah the catch point is pretty low, which i like, but it might be a bit too low. I'm looking into getting the proper s52 clutch/flywheel. Does the e30 master move enough fluid for a full s52 clutch setup?

              Yep!
My setup: s52, zf, s52 clutch/flywheel, zf slave, e30 master
The clutch works well and as one would expect.

UPDATE: I replaced the flywheel clutch and starter to all be e36 m3 components. So my current setup is:

s52, s52 dual mass flywheel, e36 m3 (s52) Sachs clutch, e36m3 throw out bearing, new fork pivot, e36 slave cylinder, e30 master cylinder, e36 pivot fork.

So the only non e36 part (slave cyl may be 328) is the master cylinder. I am getting the same sort of grinding when i have the pedal pushed fully to the floor. I am thinking the fork pivot might not be far enough toward the engine causing the slave to have to push the fork at too much of an angle causing the fork to contact the pressure plate. But it is a new stock piece, it isnt worn out. All the clutch components are new.... why would it be doing this?

                  the power of persistant googling...

last post says it all. I checked the label on my clutch kit and found KF778-02 as the Sachs part number. I got the wrong clutch...

It is a pure comedy of errors over here right now...

                      x2

Just keep moving forward. Swaps are by nature going to have issues because you're installing the wrong engine in your car, so there will be issues to get sorted out. Just think one day you will have all the issues with your swap completed and you will just have the issues of a 30 year old car to deal with :p

Lol, it was a nightmare. All my fault of course. Luckily everything worked out. FCP took the clutch back as a return even though I installed it and drove it a very short distance. Great customer service over there.

I got the correct clutch installed and it's good to go now. Only issue is drive line vibration in gear at low rpm. Both during acceleration and engine braking. Higher rpm and speed are nice and smooth.

What driveshaft and CSB you are using? And if you are using e36 driveshaft, which way you installed the CSB?

I am using a 328 driveshaft and an early model e30 CSB installed the only way it would fit.

Is it a used dual mass flywheel? They're only good for like two uses...
