I was looking today at a 97 528i and the thermostat housing has a bleeder built in. Seems to me that might make bleeding these swaps 12x easier. Anyone ever tried it?
Has anyone ever tried the E39 528i thermostat housing?

Hadn't noticed this. I just tossed one away too. Good thing new aluminum replacements are cheap. I think I bought a Uro one for less than $20."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

the overflow tank?
anyway, a lot of people end up using e36 radiators for these swaps and those have bleed screws.Comment

^ in theory the overflow tank should be self bleeding.
In actual practice it only starts to self bleed after you have bled about 95% of the air out already.
One thing I noted today is that the hose that I used on my swap and that many other people use will not work for the e39 housing because the hose bottlenecks right after the end that goes on a normal e36 thermostat housing.
An e39 hose may work. Will have to do some research.Comment
