You put washers behind the nut, in front of the flange, to basically push the flange back against the output shaft?

I find it really hard to believe that even after covering the splines in grease, fluid is leaking through the splines. It would have to displace the grease, and then actually squeeze through the nearly non-existent, perfectly machined gap between the metals.

    But if it worked, cool!

I don't think thats what he was saying. I think he meant that because the flange had some play........It was allowing the flange to move forward and backward just enough to screw up the mating surface between the inner race of the seal, and the outside of the flange. Now that I think about it.....it makes perfect sense. Even if it was the smallest amount of play, it would allow for a pretty hefty oil leak

did you put the flange back in exactly the way it came out? Those are aligned when the trans is assembled, it will not work properly if not aligned properly, it's like re-assembling a driveshaft.

At least that's how the ZF trans is I'm using from the 95 m3. THere were very clear alignment marks on it when I replaced that rear seal.

Ahhhh, that makes sense!!! That also makes sense as to why putting two seals in helped out...

I have never seen an alignment mark on a Getrag 260 or the flange. That's another theory as to why it would leak from the inner race of the seal and the flange though, if it's not balanced and wobbles a few thousands of an inch, there's a leak waiting to happen.

I have never seen an alignment mark on the flange either. I still have the old Getrag 260 that I trashed back in december sitting in the garage. I'll have a good look at it when I get home today to see what I can see.

I have the ZF trans from an e36...my mechanic advisor warned me of his experience with leaking rear output shaft seals. When we fixed mine on the garage floor, we noticed the alignment marks...painted white hash's like on the driveshaft
