S5x or no DOHC. M5x just seems half-assed. For the cost of an M5x swap you could have a hell of an M20.
If it's not hard, maybe you know the price for DA super charger kit for 318is?
If I swap m50 in my car price is the following:
    -engine 700$
    -m20 clutch 160$
    -e36 driveshaft 40$
    -differential 3.73LSD 400$
    -other stuff 200$
    -exhaust 200$
I will stick with getrag 240.
Totally around 2k$ + I get something back for my m42. (around 500$)
If I go m52 route, around extra 600$ for engine.
Both ways I get 192hp and with m52 more tq.

    Any opinions?

I originally had an m50 and didn't think it was all that fast. The m52 was a huge improvement.

My M50 swap is gonna end up costing me about $1500, but that will be a freshened up motor with ALL new gaskets. My turbo setup when complete will run me about $4500. So $6000 dollars, and about 450rwhp. In my opinion if you plan to go FI in the future, save the money and get the M50. You can always throw a different crank in it and have a 2.9l. I still wish I bought a non-vanos motor though :(

exactly for pure power reasons, m50 NV+ FI= WIN!

Yes I found that supercharger will run around 3.3$, and you will get 200hp form m42, and you won't actually have next step to do.
M50 swap will run around 2k - m42engine and you will have next step:)

Why m50 NV is better that vanos engine?
And that are differences in fuel consumption?
I am planning to build my car as daily driver for now, that's why fuel consumption matters:)

Yeah, beefier rods, dual valve springs, and different cams. NV FTW

Stay away from superchargers anyhow, if you do it...do it right.

Beefier rods = HEAVIER rods. That's the reason I didn't use them in my build. I used the M52 rods, since they are forged, the same length, and lighter.

Also true, but the weight won't play a hufe factor when you're boosting 21psi

An M50 is just a waste. I dont care if it is $700, it doesnt have enough power to overcome the added weight. For the cost of the motor alone you could build up a decent M20 that will easily out run an M5x.

If you do it right you will have more than $2k in it. Not saying you cant do it for that, but if I had an engine out it would be fully refreshed and decently hot rodded before it went back in. Not to mention I would buy a new lighter flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate that would run an extra ~$800 anyway.

Just get an S50 or S52 [unless you build an aluminum block]. Even then, I would put money into it so that it would out-perform an ///M motor.

                        My opinion though.

Did you skip the non-vanos pistons also?

(My last post doesn't apply to you)

For the record, I like my M50.

I liked my M20, too (but not as much).

Not everyone does the swap to run a 14 second 1/4.

My NA e30/M50 was a lot of fun also, for the record.
