I'm a little late but let me play too. My motor is Euro S50B30. I try to keep as many of E36 M3 bits as possible as I want the car to look and sound stock. Cats had to go though because there was not enough room so they were replaced with a pair of silencers to keep it quiet. Sorry no sound clips. Never started up the car yet.

The exhaust shop didn't want to cut up the beautiful stock Euro BMW manifold so he custom made a new one.

    E36 M3 muffler and E34 M50 mounting hardware

Heat shield moved to over rear axle to protect the rubber from heat

Intermediate pipes replaced to match the E30 body

Retained exhaust hanger which will mount to the gear box (not mounted yet)

On my new swap I used whatever cat was on my original swap car with ebay headers. Then I brought that into the stock m42 318is muffler in the rear. It looks completely stock, but sounds pretty damn good once you get on it. Not near as raspy as my old magnaflow.

Just ordered all the bits for my new exhaust.

          Ebay headers
          Vibrant 2-1 collector 2x 2" into 2.5"
          2.75" mandrel bends
          3" Borla XR-1 muffler
          2-1 collector 3" into 2x 2.25"
          into my existing Stromung cat-back

Way more money than I should have spent but whatever... hopefully it won't be too loud.

why so many size changes? you can lose a lot of velocity with all those changes. I would have made it 3" from the Y-merge back and be done with it.

Nah, I think 3" is too big for my motor and will be too loud. 2.75" is just about ideal and well matched to the Stromung cat-back I already own. The only real size change is going up 1/4" into the Borla muffler, which should be just fine from everything I've been reading.

I don't think my exhaust is too loud, and it's 3".

everyone thinks that, but they are wrong.

the stock size is about equivalent to a single 2.5". 3" is a decent upgrade, and with proper mufflers/resonators/cat, it won't be loud at all.

I have the same borla muffler BTW, it sounds pretty good.

Oh well, I guess I'll just be different. 2.75" should be plenty sufficient for my motor.

so you are going..... dual>single> dual?.... I guess you want to keep your dual cat back set up.

Why spend so much for a center reso ( borla xr1)? I know I asked this before on another car....seems like a bit of a waste...I mean a flowmaster...borla turbo, etc would be alot cheaper...no?....

Ive always felt w/ a custom exhaust, for a car that is tracked, a single 2.5 (or up to 3) is the way to go...much lighter....but I can understand you laid out cash for a cat back that you want to run

cant wait to hear it...and hear about how it feels above 5k...

                        btw...

wheRE are your sourcing the Vibrant Y pipe?..

I was looking for a decent y-merge a while back, I couldn't find anyone actually selling the Vibrant ones either.

There are definitely other options for the center muffler but I went with the Borla because I know its a quality piece and it has the perfect dimensions for the center section of the exhaust.

I had ordered the collector and all my piping from thmotorsports.com but I called this morning and cancelled the collector as I want to wait to see exactly what size I need for the ebay headers.

I can always remove the Stromung cat-back further down the road and replace with a single pipe and muffler if I feel so inclined, but I've already spent enough money on the car this month and I've got way too many projects going on.

The Borla will improve the sound of the Stromung. I run the same muffler with my Vibrant out back, and it sounds great!
