I have never seen any supporting facts about the getrag 250 being weak. I got one with a package deal so that's what I plan on running....Comment

i'm a bmw master tech. I have been workin on these cars for over 5 years now. What i have personally seen is 2 getrag 250's go bad and 1 zf but have not seen any 260's go bad. One 250 lost first gear and the other lost 2nd and the zf had something get loose in the trans and wedge itself against a gear and break a hole about the size of a half dollar piece in the case but still worked i hope this helps someone. Its rare i get to post here i have read thousands of pages here glad i get to contribute for once.Comment

Hey guys I have a question here. I am doing the m50 swap into my e30.
M50, Getrag 260, m20 flywheel, m20 performance clutch.
We put the flywheel on last night with the shim on the outside of course, bolted it on and now the crank won't spin because it's hitting the rear cover.
Am I possibly missing a crucial element in this?
Thanks guys
Wade

The oil pan AND the rear cover? Because the rear cover is of course flush with the oil pan. You mean grind it down in that area where the pan and the rear cover indent outward toward where the flywheel would be?
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Would you might happen to have a link to show this procedure?

So you are using R3V as a reference in your work? If so, gotta love that!

I don't get to post much because there are others that know alot and are on more frequently then i am. So they get to answer things
before i get a chance. I wouldn't call this reference for work i don't get to work on e30's much here in NC in jersey when i was a bmw
dealer tech there i did. But still it was only timing belts, valve adjustments, clutchs etc. nothing exciting. I will put my
in when i
can.Comment

just the oil pan. you should be able to tell where the flywheel is hitting if you've got it bolted up... thats what needs to be modifiedThe oil pan AND the rear cover? Because the rear cover is of course flush with the oil pan. You mean grind it down in that area where the pan and the rear cover indent outward toward where the flywheel would be?

You saved my life! Thanks man, I just grinded it down and now there's a couple mm of clearance between the pan and the flywheel. Excellent!

This thread is amazing!
Now I have a M50B25 that I got a 260 for. The 10* offset doesn’t worry me as I’m in a well equipped shop. The problem is. I think I got a duel mass flywheel. Will that fit? I got a new clutch with a heavy duty pressure plate. Will I need a new flywheel? And I presume I use an old m20 starter with this right?
Ps. really sorry for the grammar issues. i was writing this in between classes and forgot to take the time to proof read.Live Fast. Drive Faster.
