Hello all! I was initially intrigued by Garageaholic YouTube E30 / N54 build series and then found and was inspired by this subforum. The plan is to perform E30 / N52 swap with focus on track toy / mountain road cruising / maybe hill climbs. Hope this crew of intelligent DIY'ers will keep me pointed in right direction! I've read through and taken notes on most of the major build threads but I'm surely going to miss something... or some aspect of the swap will have evolved.
I'm drawn to the N52 for same reasons as most... weight vs. power / torque... and it will fit nicely in SCCA Time Trial "Max 5" class. My E30 already has AC and Cruise Control removed... but heat and power steering must stay.
Similar to others, I am starting out with Z4 engine mounts. Evaluating custom subframe vs. custom oil pan. Keeping both options open at moment but leaning toward custom steel oil pan and SendCutSend parts have been ordered. MIG welding is not an issue but not yet proficient with TIG.
I've been thinking about this swap for awhile and last year I acquired an E90 with rear-end damage. Already pulled engine, harness, manual transmission, DME, pedal, CAS, key Fob, fan, brake booster, and misc other parts. A notable difference on this swap is that I'll be using E90 N52 from 2011. This means MSV80. (Current) plan is to use pre-made engine --> chassis harness with CAN emulator... with the intent of making everything "plug and play".
Phase 1 will start with N52 installation and getting the car up and running on stock DME with stock intake manifold. Hopefully we'll get to Phase 2 of increasing power!
