need IX motor, help me guys!!!!

I have 1991 e30 IX. I bough it in december of 2010 and since beginning I had trouble with oil pump, on low RPM there was a oil light lighting on speedometer. Two weeks ago when I was coming back from work it suddenly lost all the power the clutch was catching almost by the floor and the motor stopped. I took it to my friend's shop and he said that the motor broke and its not fixable. He also found me a new motor and said that its gonna cost me 1200 just for motor and another 1000 to put it in. I think he is trying to rip me of off my money and it is fixable. Do you guys think it could be fixed or maybe its better to get another motor if the second one I would be interested in a motor. I live in chicago maybe someone lives in the area and could help me with that problem. I need this car fixed asap because its my only car.
    Please tell me something.

paging darkknight. I bought the tranny & all associated parts from the same donor car (for my 5-speed swap), and it drives flawlessly!

I know he has a motor for sale from that same car.

take it to a different shop, with what you told us its a bit hard to diagnose the problem.

And like ^ those guys said, used IX long blocks aren't that hard to find. The FS section on e30tech.com has a few IXes being parted all the time.

yes, i do have ix motor. But i never shipped and engine before. if you can find a way to get it shipped to you, then its yours unless someone local pick it up.

All 325 and 525 motors are the same, just use the oilpan from your motor and ur good to go.
At least up here on the european models.

Are you sure that regular 325i motor will fit IX just with the oil pan change??
I heard that there has to be some hole drilled in block.
Please let me know because I need the car as soon as possible.

The iX block is different, and this has been confirmed on countless occasions. I believe they had to reposition an engine mount (not sure) for the AWD system components to fit.

                To quote flyboyx off e30tech:
since this is a sticky, i thought that i would mention that it is prudent to buy a car with a serviceable/rebuildable engine. awd engines are pretty hard to find since the ix engine isn't interchangeable with a standard e30. of course the oil pan is different, but the dipstick is in the wrong position where it is drilled through the block. also the oil pump is completely different as well as the machined pads on the engine where it mounts. seems like it spins the opposite direction.

That last part about the oil pump spinning in the opposite direction may or may not be true, I remember reading a thread debating that issue. The other differences are real, however.

IX blocks are different however with some changes an I motor can work. you need and ix oil pan and motor mounts and you'll have to bend the oil tube. I think there's other things to but i can't remember everything, but it is possible.

so it seems like I need new motor. N.Y. is too far from Chicago but I am willing to drive somewhere closer. Does anyone have IX engine drawings? How it is mounted in car and how it is connected to transmission. Is there some manual like Bentley? Sorry for all those questions but since I bought this car i felt in love with it, I don't want different car. How can I take out the engine? Did any one do it before??

This topic has been covered many times before but it's still a question with a "Gray Area" answer.

I've heard of people using the stock iS m20 and having to changeout the oil pump gears? or some shit like that so that the oil pump circulates the way it should on the iX. If you havn't checked out e30tech.com for more info do that! They seem to be more active/knowledgable about the iX than R3V.

I have one, needs head gasket and valve seals.

I was up above it, Now I'm down in it ~ Entropy - A Build thread.

how is it easier to change the engine?
is it better to lift it.
                            or to drop it.
                            please explain why
