huh?
they are made by ZF.. not Ford. not GM. :loco:
there's not really a such thing as a horsepower limit, in any case. There could possibly be a torque limit, but it's far more than most people put through it. Nobody has ever actually tested it anyway, but there are plenty of cars making 300-500 and more.Comment

Thats what I thought. I have read that the way BMW developed this system was completely new at the time, not that it was taken from some other car manufacturer.huh?

yeah, GM and Ford have never had an AWD system anything like the ix.. even their new stuff is just FWD volvo parts with power sent to the rear for when a soccer mom is about to skid into bus stop.Comment

I was gonna say that. From what I have read, the way BMW designed the system was quite revolutionary for that time and gave a more rwd feel to the car than any other awd system had. Where the euro cossie Escorts AWD or RWD?Comment

the *type* of AWD system the ix uses was developed by Ferguson in the 1960s. The system used in the ix has nothing to do with any Ford, and was never adapted from any Ford product. There's no other AWD car with the same transfercase. So I don't know what you are talking about..

the only AWD ford built in the ix's time was a rally car, and it wasn't made until after ix development had already started.Comment

it "came" from the "ferguson formula", not a Ford, and like I said the transfercase is unique to the ix and built by ZF. If there were a mass produced Ford with the same transfercase I'm sure parts availability would be a bit better, but since no mass produced AWD car from Ford existed in the early 1980s..Comment
