So there WAS a Euro Ford using a similar Ferguson AWD layout that BMW borrowed from? The Scorpio hit the streets in '88. Not trying to annoy or undermine nando's expertise, it just pisses me off when I read things in publications that are not true.

No, they both use a ferguson type layout. The ix came out in '87 in Europe by the way.

Ooh I didn't know that! I thought it was only one year before the late models were introduced.

yeah, check out the ETK. february 1985 through december 1992 (for tourings). and figure it took at *least* 2 years to engineer the thing before 1985. There weren't any similar (FF AWD layout) cars for BMW to copy at that time.

I will have to look into that some time, and nobody to my knowledge had made a car with the same style awd setup.

Here is a car and driver article about it, I think it talks about the awd system.

actually that Ford in 1988 is pretty similar. it uses a Ferguson layout and 2/3 rear bias. Also available with a Cosworth 24v V6.. but only in England. :p

Im quite sure it was in -86. A pals father bought a demo car that fall, and from what i can remember they were new on the market. At least up here in Norway.
And yes, to drive a brand new IX felt insanly great :)

First production month was 02 1985, a bit early to be an '86 model year

from what i have read, the weak link is the front differential, not the transfer case...
