Been busy with life while the e30 sits in the driveway waiting to start the headgasket and head freshening.
With today's snow, work was called off, so I pulled the ol' girl in the garage and started the tear down.
Got about 2 hours in today. Everything was pretty straight forward no surprises, no broken nuts or bolts.
I don't think it will take more than an hour to get the head off. Maybe I'll get an hour or so one day this week after work.
No time this weekend I'm of to NYC for 4 or 5 days.
A few pics.

Internals seem pretty clean, over all not bad for 164k miles

Intake ports are surprisingly clean

Looks like the general engine bay will clean up nicely.
I just went through this last year on my old 635. Still have a few parts to order.
My machine shop usually turns around a head rebuild in a day or two.
