Honestly - I think $8000 is high..
Anecdotal evidence suggest that the main market for E30's is more lower income, teens, lower 20s, college aged.. (not everybody - just a generalization of who is buying these)
Im not in the main market and I am "reviving" my youth with the cars I had on my wall.. There are quite a few of us out there (enthusiasts) - but not enough demand to move the prices upward. True, the 325ix is special, but there still aren't enough enthusiasts that just want that vehicle (no substitutes). It's rare - but not that rare.. Which is a testament to the reliability - try finding a 80's grand am that isn’t rusted or blown..
When I bought my son's car, I was looking for something reliable and seasonal and it landed in my lap. It sat on a dealers lot for 6 months and l offered him $2000 lower than his asking price.. He was happy to get rid of it.. A lot of these sit, and a lot of these scare off regular buyers.
I have thought about flipping these - but there really is no market arbitrage availability in general E30s. Even if I were lucky to find one for a $1000 - A person usually has to drop another grand (timing belt, suspension, other little things) just to get $3000 out of it.. A lotta work for a profit potential of $1000
The M3 (and Specialty models) seem to be where the money is and honestly if you can locate fair to good models under $20K - you can make $5-10 grand fairly quickly..
