I was under the impression after reading chris' thread that the 3.38 did fit, and it was just the 3.23 that didn't, but this just means less messing around with what I have.

So I just bought a 3.64 R&P from Wangan to match the rear diff to the front 3.64 I have, so I'll be joining you in 3.64 land soon.
The 3.38 was never (to my knowledge) offered in an E30 diff case, so you have to build one... and if you want to keep the iX's VC LSD, then you have to start with an iX rear diff.

I had a 3.64 VC LSD unit put together... we'll see when I get to use it.

    I'm also contemplating a 3.64 210mm conventional LSD.

why a 210mm? I've heard very little about people having issues with rear diffs, even the guy with the 700-something hp ix hasn't killed the rear diff yet.

the 3.38 was never offered in an e30 case, but the 188mm R&P are all interchangable, so you could use an ix rear VC LSD and the E36 M3 R&P, or gut the e36 diff into an e30 case as a whole. Either way, it doesn't matter to me because I'm not willing to invest enough to swap out the M20/ix driveline for something else.

The iX VC LSD has unequal length output flanges, which means that using the VC LSD limits me to the 86mm CV jonts, which do have durability problems starting ~300 RWHP.

This can be fixed by going to the 94mm CV joints, which are available for the 188, but need custom work to go into an E30.

My transmission and T-case are going to end up being serious overkill at my initial power level... so why not the rear diff as well?

Also, bolting in a 210mm unit is an interesting problem in parts compatibility. I have an E23 745i turbo diff, which, along with the E24 M6/M635CSi and E28 M5 has the only 210mm case which will bolt to the E30 subframe. Pack that with the 3.64 LSD and rear cover from a late E32 750i, diff mount bracket from E36 M3 CSL and 102mm CV joints from E38 750i or E39 M5 and I'll have an unbreakable rear end.

Don't both of those cars use the regular M30? I thought they used 188mm units.

Yes they do but they actually use 210 diff. I got a E28 M535 210 3.07 diff in my garage that i want to use with the X5 3.07 front diff later on :)

Sorry for bringing up a old thread. But will a lsd front and rear work in these cars. Someone on r3v said they can get me a lsd 3.73. Gears for the rear in open or lsd. If it works I'd want lsd. But can a lsd work in these cars well? And I know the front and rear have to match.

It already has an LSD rear... viscous rather than clutch pack.

There's no LSD available for the front.

Okay cool . I'm trying to figure a way to get the front Diff more sturdy above 300hp. This guy is a Diff builder so I'm trying to see if he can do anything about the front Diff. And maybe you can answer my question. What about the front Diff gives up?

Lsd isn't going to help. It will probably make it worse. Not that 300hp is really that big of a deal.

Remember, not all of the power goes through the front. Also, drivetrain components are really rated by torque input, not HP.
