I squeezed out nearly 30 once going downhill in my ix with 19# injectors and m30 afm on a 3 hour trip to grandmas.

Was usually around 25 or so even with the turbo on the highway, and maybe 15-20 in town.

I highly suggest the 4 pintle 19# injector upgrades for stock ix's as the fuel atomization of a not 30 year old injector is likely much better than what is in there. Even new stock injectors are likely much better.

Yeah but I guess I forgot to mention I don't have an ix. Diff is a 3.73 though.

edit: Q5Quint, what 19lb injectors are you using?

I didn't mention this in the OP, but I'm running M50 (17lb) injectors and a sssquid chip on my ix..anyone else running this combo and not getting over 300 miles a tank?

Now that is a really good point. Might be high time for some new injectors.

I posted this before in another thread, but between 11/28/2011 and 11/18/2013 (last time I updated my excel sheet), I've had 68 fill-ups with my ix. I started using 93 octane in Jan 2013 with a mark D chip installed.

My overall average including highway and city, across all 68 fill-ups is 19.75 mpg. I can easily spot city trips vs. highway trips in my chart. My best highway tank was 26.16 mpg. I drove 243.2 miles on 9.296 gallons. I think I could have easily gone over 300 but I had to fill up for a return trip.

My worst city tank was 15.821 mpg during which I drove 202.75 miles on 12.815 gallons.

            Hope this helps.

Over the last 200 gallons I have averaged 23 mpg. Off the cuff, that is probably 2/3 highway, 1/3 city, with 2/3 of it being over winter in and around Fargo, ND. My best mileage is just over 30 mpg (slow highway driving behind my uncle's RV), and my worst was 14 mpg (early January "polar vortex" all city driving).

I would like to point out that the epa rates an 89 5 speed ix a 15 city, 18 combined, and 21 highway.

in 89 i think we have a 16.6 gallon tank. 300 miles max before your light comes on according to epa numbers, but if you are cruising slower or have a better air filter or something it could go over 300 miles a tank.

those EPA numbers are pretty bogus. they took the original numbers from when it was tested in the '80s, and applied a multiplier to reduce it to what they estimate it gets on the modern tests.

I don't even get as low as 15mpg driving in our 25mph, stoplight at every block, potholes so bad I can't even go the speed limit town. I also know my stroker could be tuned better for fuel efficiency and I have 4.10s with R888s as my "summer tires". 15mpg on a stock ix means something is wrong with it.

Window sticker from my 1988 says 17 City MPG and 23 Highway MPG. I typically get better than rated highway, and right around or slightly better than rated city.

I would say one or two tanks closer to 15 MPG, assuming you've been driving hard with hills, etc., isn't unreasonable. But as Nando said, you shouldn't be seeing that number, or under that number consistently without looking for issues.

air filter + injector swap + your cat has probably turned into a buttplug.

Dang! I get 25-27 with my 2.7i almost entirely highway, and 20-24 city. Of course my car has:
                        14.5 gallon tank (pre-facelift tank)
                        no cat
                        refurbished injectors (19#)
                        refurbished M20 AFM
                        K&N drop in
                        2.93 diff

Do you have a wide-band? What are you cruising AFRs? I'd hate for you to be unsatisfied with my tune's economy, so I'll work with you to make it better however we can :)

Keep in mind my car is not an iX as well, has the long diff, and quite a few refurbished or new parts that would attribute to better MPG. The awd will net a little less MPG usually.

Oh, and I try to drive as efficiently as I know how (stay behind bigger vehicles, engine braking, etc)

89 ix. I am getting 375 kms per tank ( ~230 miles). 1/2 highway 1/2 city. But I also think I need a new AFM.

I have found that my iX does not get good mileage in the winter when the engine does not warm up quickly. Currently, I have a lazy thermostat and only register 150 degrees just after the coolant pump after warm-up. It never warms up driving in-town. I'm going to run a fresh 88 degree stat next winter. I have not had the guts to even check it - it is so bad. My guess is 12-14 MPG. I usually get 25 on the highway with a proper tune.
