Love the blog. Looking at your sig, I assume you've tried to bring one of these verts over?
Thank you for your kind words. The blog is a Labor of Love, and a a lot of fun! I would LOVE to be able to bring a Baur ix here but..... if you have looked at my sig.... you can see that I already have a bunch of cars and.... I want to STAY married! ;)

But I do look at the European ads.... so ... I haven't ruled it completely out! But, let's keep this little chat between us... and not breathe a word to You-Know-Who!

    wink wink. nudge nudge. ;)

On the other hand..... there IS an American-built AWD Baur-type convertible out there! Same style built-in roll bar, targa top, soft fold down rear top... but I think you will agree: it is just NOT the same thing!

    UGH! ;)

Whoa. Readers of this blog may be aware that I have lamented on a number of occasions the fact that one of my favorite cars, the BMW E...

Baurs were not made by BMW
There were basically two ways to get a Baur:
    1) BMW would build the coupe, send it to Baur who would cut off the top and install what for the E30 is really a 'cage', sand they would then send it back to the factory, where it was sold with a full factory warranty.
    2) Some buyers would buy a coupe from a dealer, and order the Baur package. The dealer would then send it to Baur for conversion, and it would be delivered to the buyer through the dealership.
    3) There were also also about 3,000 BMW E30s that were converted to Top Cabriolets in South Africa under license to Baur. Those models do not have the official Baur number identification plate that was standard on all Stuttgart-built Baurs.
    4) We have found one (1) BMW E21 that has the top cabriolet conversion, but it appears that the conversion was done in Hempstead NY by American Sunroof company (ASC), a well known custom conversion coach builder back in the day. We believe that ASC did the conversion under license to Baur, similar to the South African arrangement. It has a Baur-like number id plate that reads : American Sunroof 00001. We think it may be a one-off. :) It is identical to the Baur conversions, btw.
With the exception of the Baur 'bits', the rest of these cars are all standard BMW parts, built by BMW. I own an E21 323i Baur, and I write the Baurspotting blog. :)
