iX short shifter?

    it might have to do with the ix shifter having such a short leverage ratio below the fulcrum. I mean when you put it into 5th gear with the stock lever the travel is like 8" from 2nd lol.

    in retrospect I think I could have done it without altering the length, and just making sure it cleared everything else (including the aluminum carrier). however it worked out though I have the Z3 lever in backwards and it's perfectly centered.. go figure.

      Does anyone know if the IE super short shifter would fit an ix?

      I have the z3 1.9 kit, but I've driven e30s with it and it's too short imo. The IE is top side adjustable, so I'm hoping I can find a sweet spot.

        it depends on the length below the fulcrum. if it's any longer, then no, it won't fit.

        are you sure those cars didn't have a Z3M shift lever? I don't see how the 1.9 could be too short.

          Hope you're right about this. Found your thread recently about your DSSR mods and length changes and decided to give it a try.

          I called UUC and their DSSR for the e36 is 2mm longer than for the e30 (189 vs 187), but other dimensions are the same. I ordered one and plan to dive in sometime in the next week or two.

            Be sure to post how that goes. I'm currently still waiting on the custom order one that's 5mm longer. It's been 3 months now.

              I think it will work. be prepared to raise and lower the transfercase a couple times to get it to clear. I had to modify the aluminum shift carrier as well as the DSSR itself.

                I have the Z3 1.9 shifter in my E34. It was a pleasant improvement, but I can't imagine anyone calling it too short.

                  Thanks. Your other thread was pretty helpful so think I've got a good idea what I'm up against, and maybe cussing can be held to a minimum. :-)

                    Short shifters are all about preference. I'm just not a fan of the z3 1.9. I reached out to Jeff Ireland and emailed him for info. This is his response.

                    Our shifter is about 1.9" on center from ball to bottom hole. The Z3 unit is 1.56". BUT our shifter has an adapter the raises the ball up over .5"
                    So I'll give it a shot and report back.

                      I replaced my shifter last week with z3 the 1.9 version. I am still getting used to it. It is more notchy but it feels firm. Removing and replacing the Tc was the hardest job I've ever done! (And I've rebuilt a Honda engine.) follow booge2 instructions.

                        The IE is pretty much identical to the UUC. It fits the ix no problem. The dssr did need to be lengthened 3mm though. I told a local shop to extend it an eighth of an inch. Seems to work great. 7.5" center to center seems about right.

                        The ix feels like a whole new car with the jb racing flywheel, bimmerworld's clutch and pp, and the IE ssk. I picked up some bolts and rubber chair feet to create a clutch stop because now I feel like I kick the pedal through the floor. The new clutch/pp is very soft.

                          I'm still waiting on a few parts before diving into my rebuild, but the e36/189mm DSSR arrived.

                          Check it out. It's machined differently than the one in nando's post #14, and looks like it should cut down on the amount of material I'll need to remove from the rod itself.

                            yeah looks like just some on the sharp corner there would be enough. the rest is already ground pretty flat!

                              So this turned out really well. Very little grinding/filing needed, doesn't hit anywhere, and feels great from what I can tell. Disclaimer is that I haven't actually driven the car (pulled interior out while I was waiting for parts), but had it all back together, on the ground, and shifted through the gears a bunch.
