    iX short shifter?

So ive been looking around for short shifters for the iX. All ive seen is the UUC short shifter and ive seen a modified DSSR to work in an iX. Ive seen a couple of people say the Z3 shifter fits in the ix as well. Can anyone help me confirm the Z3 shifter and is there any way someone can school me on modifying the DSSR to work with the iX?

The guy I bought my car from said it had a Z3 short shifter in it. I have not pulled it apart to verify the make however.

I did have the tranny and tcase out a couple weeks ago and intended to rebuild the entire shift linkage, but the custom DSSR I ordered from UUC did not arrive. Nor has it arrived yet. UUC agreed to make me a custom DSSR which is 5mm longer (as per nando's instructions) although it has now been 2 months and UUC still has not shipped it to me. They are saying that they need to stop their whole production line to make my one part. It did not stop them from taking my money and shipping costs and not manufacturing anything for me yet to date.

I believe there is some additional shaving of the DSSR that you have to do on top of lengthening it, but that can be done to fit. Also, I would just order a standard DSSR and mod it for your needs. Any UUC custom work puts you to the bottom of their priority list and they could care less about you.

In that case I need to ask you. How difficult is it to drop the transmission on the ix? Ive never done it and my car needs a new clutch soon.

Well for me I didn't find it to be awesome. But that being said, this is my first automotive project undertaking, and I don't have access to a lift. Air tools are nice to break apart rusted bolts and what not. Also a about 2-3 ft of 3/8's extensions and a couple swivels will be needed to get the top two bolts of the Tcase.

        1. Start by getting the car SAFELY on jackstands.
        2. Remove the exhaust from the header back to the muffler
        3. Remove the front flex disc from the dshaft and diff, then pull forward on the dshaft and remove.
        4. Remove the rear driveshaft bolts on the diff side and then tcase side. Loosen the collar nut with a pipe wrench or big crescent wrench and collapse the driveshaft. Depending on rust, this cock sucker may not want to budge. You may have to force it.
        5. Remove the tcase-to-tranny guibo bolts
        6. Remove the tcase cross member bolts while having a jack under the tranny
        7. lower the tranny with the jack until you have access to get your extension/swivel contraption onto the top 2 bolts that connect tcase and tranny (there are 4). DO NOT STRIP THESE BOLTS or your life will suck. I am a big guy with big hands and I had just enough room to use one hand to ram the extensions and socket in, and use the other to make sure the socket fully seated around the bolt head.
        8. After the top two are removed, partially remove the lower two, and use a rubber mallet to beat the tcase off of the tranny. The two bolt syou left in will catch it.
        9. I used a second jack and removed the bolts and lowered the tcase with the jack. But I am a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles and this was my first time and didn't want to crush a finger.

I think that's the general gist of it. Make sure you take pictures of which way flex disks go in, and make sure to mark the way the two pieces of the rear driveshaft went together so that you don't rotate one with relation to the other. Could throw it out of balance.

The stock ix shift lever has one of the longest throws of any stock bmw. The z3 1.9 is a big upgrade, its also the only one that clears the transfercase..

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Why would the iX's DSSR need to be 5mm longer?

Not sure, ask nando. But they are different part #'s.

                            because it's longer. :p

I bought a DSSR a long time ago. Went to put it in but I couldn't go into gear. turned out it was too short (and also hitting the transfercase). I put them side by side, somewhere I have a pic..

I had it lengthened but they made it too long. Then I had it shortened, and they made it too short. lol. So actually I have my Z3 lever installed backwards, with the DSSR ground to clear the transfercase, and also modified the shift carrier, and it works perfectly..
