Actually I have no issues with threading it all the way in, that's the easiest part. I don't have a clue how to bend the locking washers tabs inward.. I did the passenger side with no issues. If you can tell me how to do that then I'll be set. I want to do it right, I don't want to use loctite on the inner end threads or zip ties on the boots. Is there a tool that you used to bend the washers over the tie rod besides a hammer? This is what I can't figure out...

Also I should mention, I already had to take the control arms out to take to a shop and get new outer ball joints pressed in. Wouldn't I only have to disconnect the ujoint and the two p/s lines that go to the rack? Correct me if I'm wrong but with the engine supported I just have to undo the 4 bolts and lower it. Ofcourse this would be lots more work. Wouldn't I be able to unbolt the rack and then move it left or right or would it be impossible? The joys of a having a iX as a first car. Lots to learn from others experience, hopefully I can bend the washer inward.. Thanks

I don't remember having an issue with that. I might have used a pair of pliers, or a long screwdriver so I could still hit it with a hammer.

          You're getting there.

Don't use loctite, that's not necessary. Just make sure its tight. Bentley state about 27 ft/lbs.. i.e. tighten it but don't horse it.

I had trouble with the washer also - although I took a flat bar and hammered it on the top - bending the tab over just slightly. Bend it towards the inner tie rod. Use a tack hammer or even a steel bar to tap it down.

In my opinion, I wouldn't worry too much about that tab. just get it bent over as well as you can. I don't believe there's a lot of force on it when complete. The steering rack is threaded into the inner which is threaded to the outer, which is connected to the steering knuckle. I would be more concern that the inner is tight into the steering rack.

Thanks Nando & 95BMWIC!! You guys are really helpful, when I do the passenger side I use a screwdriver through the subframe, I'll definitely try a few of those methods if that doesn't work. I'm working on a few other things on the car right now so I might not get to it until later in the week.

Okay so I did this, ended up using some vise grips to mash the washer over the lip. Isn't pretty but it works. Also I tried to use a clamp, took a while to get it on but could get my tool in there so I used a zip tie.

Sometimes I like to think it is other times not so much. I'm working on it though. Everything expensive is typically iX specific as far as mechanical. Nice iX! Doesn't look like Nebraska.. Haha
