We used to get up to 25 on the highway with our automatic iX cars consistently. Town MPG was horrific though!

I will admit there was some margin for error considering the odo does not work and i was calculating based on the GPS distance from the last town we got gas at... but it was between 20-25 mpg so I will take it! Now to solve my cooling issues so I can actually drive it...

Yes. My auto ix got 25-26mpg pretty consistently with 95% highway driving. My manual ix I've never seen above 23mpg.

I don't think based on two or 3 examples we can assume auto ix's get better mileage than manuals. Because they don't. I have an original window sticker from an auto. If I remember right it says 17 and 21.

I think it probably based on other factors such as timing, etc.

Effective final ratio is most likely part of the culprit ( over a 5% difference )

Both of my 325iX sedan automatics got 25 on the highway (all stock - mo mods)...

I don't think my manual got that with either 4.10 or 3.91 gear sets. I suspect that driving style was as much a contributor as the ratio issue. The automatic just chugs along on the highway - it's not like you are shifting down to get your passing done in a hurry! The manuals are just more fun to drive so they get hammered.

I am terrible at forums... That being said... I will post a project thread this evening! All the cooling issue was was a loose ground on the gauge cluster. Fixed it and drove it daily for a couple weeks. I have a parasitic battery drain somewhere to find... BUT now all the drive train is pulled out... at the moment... going 2.7 and turbo!
