Changing the Clutch on my IX - What parts should I change?

    Hi everyone,

Been on bimmerforums for a long time but just joined r3vlimited especially after seeing that you have a dedicated forum channel for the IX. Glad to be here.

I'm about to drop the transmission on my 88IX 5spd as it feels like the release bearing is catching on the sleeve or something. It's been a problem that the car has had since I brought it back to life last year after sitting for 5 years. The clutch still bites good but I'm not going to put a used clutch back into the car.

My question for you guys is... Besides the clutch, release bearing and maybe flywheel (hopefully just a resurface), what other parts should I change while the transmission is out? Perhaps all the bushings with the shifter, rear main seal, etc?

Any advice you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mike

Change the brass pin the shifting fork rides on in the bell housing

I would replace all of it - shifter fork, clips, bearings, selector rod joint, etc. Most of the parts are dirt cheap anyway.

Yeah I might as well since I plan to keep the car for a long time. Going to call and order the parts today. Thanks!

            Must do....

            Rear engine crankshaft oil seal
            Full clutchpack including pilot
            Front tranny oilseal
Front tranny bearing (first motion shaft) if you're feeling good and you have Grattle
            All shifter service components
            Rear tranny driveshaft seal
            Shifter seal

            Maybe....

            Tranny mounts
TC Mount, sooooo much easier when out of the car
TC shaft seals if they look iffy

there's no transmission mounts on an ix. there is only the TC mount.

Wow really awesome list so thanks so much. My clutch kit was delayed as it needed to be shipped from Texas to CA so I'll be working on the car next weekend. I already ordered the rear main seal and shifter components but will definitely order the rest of the parts today.

                  Thanks again!

                    Another question for you guys

Do any of you know where I might be able to find a transmission housing for the IX?

Dropped the transmission today and it turns out that ball pin where the clutch release lever sits on wore down or probably was not put back into place properly by the previous owner as the lever rubbed on the housing itself and caused a gash where the ball pin would be.

Any advice on where to look would be great. Hitting up Double02Salvage here in Hayward, CA to see if they have any used ones but I realize that the IX is a rare care and parts are scarce.

                    Thanks!

Can't you just get a new brass pin? Pictures?

Unfortunately, the lever seems to have been rubbing on the housing itself as it made gashes on the housing. See the pics below

Someone more experienced maybe can chime in. I see the gashes but I don't see any cracks or structural damage. Because everything is so dirty I can't really make out any detail, but it looks like the hole is still there. Maybe just clean it up with a dremel or drill?

The brass pin inserts into the hole, so I'm not sure what the issue still is. If the hole is mostly smashed, 2 part epoxy/jb weld a new brass pin in place.

if the pin mounting boss is badly damaged, check around and see if you have a good welding specialist in your area. They will be able to build that boss back up with an aluminium welding rod.

If you feel confident you can do this yourself with the correct rod and a propane torch, it doesn't need a ton of heat to weld that stuff.

Once the boss is rebuilt you'll just need to redrill and counterface the boss.

                              Hi Everyone,

I wanted to give you all an update since you've helped out so much. Ended up taking the transmission to a fabrication shop where they rebuilt the ball pin holder for $100.

The IX is now off the jack stands and drives so smooth with the new clutch and resurfaced flywheel along with all the parts you all suggested to replace. A replacement breather for my transfer case did hold me up for half a week as the part wasn't stocked anywhere but things went smoothly.

I've been slowly bringing this IX back from the dead as it sat for more than 7 years but now I'm happy to be able to enjoy it again.

                              Thanks again everyone!
