Seam sealer in the engine bay.

Do you guys know what kind of brush on seam sealer was used from the factory? I'm trying to replicate the factory look on my shock towers and other places in the bay. Looking for a similar product. 3M Preferred.

    Thx

Brush? Mine seems to have been applied through a caulking gun of sorts.

I agree it was applied like caulk

I have a tube in my workshop. Will get pics up. It's 3M and is in a tube.

Applied via an air powered caulk gun most likely to make it efficient.

This is interesting. I have an 88 and a 90 and the caulking in engine bay is different.

The 88 325 is much closer to brushed caulk, whereas the 90 is like a bubbly caulk line, no brush marks.

Seems as though they switched method sometime between these years :)

^exactly what I was going to type. Same thing I've noticed as well. There's definitely two different types. I will have to double check what my 89 has.

Remember all e30s were not built in the same facility

I would say the earlier cars looked like they had some sort brush or finishing done to them vs later cars. Be interesting to know what changes were done to the assembly line procedures over the run.

I did some sealing on an early MY car that had the brush look. I used some 3M stuff (can't remember the number and the tube was thrown away) that was applied with a standard caulking gun, then you just shape it with a wet stiff bristled brush. Came out pretty good and similar to stock. Gotta keep the brush wet or it will start to stick and clump to the brush.

Although, on the small section on the top of my fenders it looks like it was just gun'd on and never brushed.

Mine has both caulked and brushed seams.
