You realize that just totally ruined your argument about how E30's are bad in snow right?
If those 3 gentlemen were able to drive their cars back with large tires in snow, then please explain to me how a properly equiped e30 with snow tires could possibly be any worse?

Yes the Audi might offer you more peace of mind and an easier commute. I wont argue that. I'm only arguing your statements about e30's in snow.

i just want to know one thing which i just read about your post. how in the world is it possilbe for a e30 to go somewhere where a Audi A4 cant???

and speaking of the 3 guys well they did not have 2 feet of snow but only couple fo inches.

E30s are not safe in the snow, especially when there is alot of snow such as today in the northeast

I've driven on highways in snow storms, passed sand and salt trucks in order to maintain momentum and never had an accident. I've driven my e30 in everything from ice, to snow from .5" to 7". Like Charlie said, you keep momentum and your fine. Drive up a gear to keep the revs low, 4 good snow tires, maybe some weight in the trunk, and you should be fine.

Does this mean you go out and bomb ass around like Tommi Makinen or Colin McRae? Nope, it requires you to be intelligent in your decisions.
Its snowing here right now, and if I had my car here on campus, I'd be going out to play right now.

As for the A4, I dont know, your guess is a good as mine. Neeldess to say, he was pretty pissed.

All my driving experiences have been in a lowered e30, not excessive, only H&R sports. So I would imagine a stock suspensioned e30 is much better.

I'd much rather be in a RWD e30 than some civic hatch-crap FWD. FWD is dumb in any sort of incliment weather. IMHO its better to oversteer in bad weather than to understeer. At least with oversteer you have better chances of saving it.

          Here's the bottom line:

Ever seen a RWD car in the ditch? Not often.

Fact is, like Andre, people think they are bulletproof in FWD, AWD and 4WD, and end up driving too fast for conditions. They fling themselves off the road, and/or cause accidents.

RWD car owners KNOW they can't go fast, and they don't (for the most part).

However, i would MUCH RATHER have to deal with oversteer, than understeer in a FWD or A/4WD car. I can control oversteer with the right amounts of throttle input. What are you gonna do when the attempt to turn, and end up plowing straight?

Any car sucks in snow, PERIOD. The safest ones are high end AWD/4WD trucks like the X5, the volvo and VW trucks.

WHen i see snow, i see FUNNNNNN!!!!!!!.

yea good comment ppl with RWD are very careful. what are u on drugs BRO. but then againt hat would explain the dozens of RWD cars i saw stuck in snow today. Its not up to the driver, even thou most of you here are (professional drivers) but up to the car, when u cant move on a uphill or park your car cause there is a bit too much snow then there is nothing you can do. I jsut came home from helping a neighbor with a 97 M3 park. He got stuck, and it took 2 of us 10 mins to get him to park in

Since Andre was nice enough to cut and paste this thread topic over on VWVortex, I figure I'll add the same reply here that I made there:

bottom line RWD SUCKSSSSSSSS in snow i dont care if u got ASR or what not, its just not ment for that.
Your experience, and your opinion, are just that: yours.

Someone who has a differing opinion--and can successfully drive a RWD car through snow, something that hundreds of thousands of drivers have managed to do over the years--is not automatically wrong, nor are they automatically stupid.

I've driven multiple RWD cars and trucks quite successfully in up to 22" of snow, using the techniques that Charlie states (hefty bit of weight over the rear axle + winter tires + appropriate driving techniques). I've never gotten stuck. Ever.

snow tires dont help on a E30. if it snows DO NOT DRIVE A e30 period
Wow, where to begin here.

I guess you somehow forgot that BMW produced an all wheel drive E30? The 325iX...does that ring a bell at all? They are GREAT cars in low-traction situations, both in manual and automatic form.

Also, again--with a factory LSD, a set of snow/ice tires, and some weight in the trunk, an E30 makes a very controllable winter car. In fact, I prefer RWD in many conditions, as I can throttle steer my way out of an understeer situation. The only reason I wouldn't drive my 325is in winter is it has fresh paint on a good deal of the nose, and as it's lowered it would put the NLA front spoiler at too much risk of damage.

Snow = not cool (pun intented)

Last winter was a BITCH. It didn't snow that much, but i got stuck plenty of time. I had great control and could keep on the road no problem. But i had a light 2WD car - FWD......
anyway, i got stuck like 3-4 times in my friend's sloped driveway in about 4 inches of snow - - but it was taller because the plows piled up at the end.

If you can handle a RWD car in the snow, mad props to you. Staying on the road is good and something that sets you apart from most of the people out there.

However, my point is.....what happens when your wheels get caught in deep snow. I carried two of the planks with me and eventually got out, but it was a pain.

This year, i'm in a Big Blue Buick Beater......it's heavy and holds up in snow, so this season will be cool.

But next year, I want to pick up an Audi Quattro for cheap. I always liked the 90Q.....5spd, 4WD, leather, conservative nice styling. I could pick up an older model for not too much, and better than putting my E30 in the snow. I just home I don't fall in love with it......but probably won't.
When winter ends, I can uncover the E30 again for the autocross season!

andre... question for ya... do you have a limited slip?

i do... and it's a completely different ball game... and i'm also driving on REALLY WORN summer tires, since i haven't been able to get snows on yet because i've been workin 7 days a fuckin week... right now there's about 2 & 1/2 feet of snow out in my front yard & there was about a foot when i left for work this morning... it only took me 8-10 more minutes to get to work than it usually takes me (10-15 min on clear driving days, 1/2 of it highway)... sure, it wasn't fun, but it wasn't tough either

is AWD bette in the snowr?... definitly, in most situations... are e30's crap in the snow? are snow tires worthless on an e30?.... FUCK NO are you an IDIOT? ... if you can't drive a rwd car in the snow then you just plain don't know HOW to

So how about some pics of the cat who made this thread's damage? I live on the NC coast. Winters aren't a problem for me. RWD rules 365 days a year.

no doubt an e30 can be made more winter worthy, but i would not put an e30 on a list of good cars to drive around in during the winter.

you are not the only ones on the road. making quick actions in snow in any car often leads to disaster, and in an e30 they are more prone to fish tailing even moreso then many other RWD cars on the road, which often times is unrecoverable in emergency situations. i would think most of you can relate to this... i would think everyone except people that think they are some professional hot shot drivers. if u think i'm silly 'n inexperienced for saying such a statement, so be it.. i'll still help u out of that ditch

this is not to say i don't drive my lowered e30 during the winter. but given the option to drive a beater, i'd certainly park my e30 atleast during snow storms. sometimes this is not an option. sometimes a second beater is not budgeted, 'n not possible, and you need to get somewhere, 'n must drive the e30. we are not all cool like andre, 'n have a different car to drive.
