One of the first things I did was remove the airbag wheel & replace it with an Mtech1.

so the 1990 e30s were the first to receive airbag wheels? Interesting, airbags equal death.. I personnaly dont see the inconviences in wearing a seat belt that others do. Dont get me wrong there are lots of times i catch myself without it on, but i feel like i dont have my wallet when i dont have it on.. Just an empty feeling that somethings not right.
I was in a helicopter crash when i was 11 and that put everything into perspective to me lol..

I believe some of the late 89s had them as well.

Anyone who goes without a seat belt is an absolute moron.

As for the Airbags, Gen. 1 ones are nowhere near as good as what is out now. I removed mine in favor of a non-airbag Alpina wheel.

MitchFong... on Canadian e30's the airbag was an option after 88; in the states it was required. There are a few other different things on Canadian e30's like the 88+ "iS" cars came with Mtec II steering wheel and shift knob.

                      Whats an airbag wheel?

We daisy chained 5 bags together and lit em up in the trunk of a newer model geo metro.... THAT.... was cool. Blew the fucking thing off the hinges. There's video on one of these sites of some guys blowing up 20 of them under a truck bed. Flings the bed like 50ft in the air. I think its worth removing the bag JUST for the carnage that ensues....

I removed mine. Consider how much of the model line didn't have airbags as standard.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

Removed the one in my ///M3 in favor of an Evo 3 wheel. Have the Mtech 2 in the 325e (which didnt come with airbag). Didnt look back.

I am having the same issue, I just purchesed a real alpina/momo wheel and need to remove my airbag wheel.

What is involved in swapping the wheel on???
                              New hub?? Spacer for spindle??

Hi, my name is Bobby, and I'm a moron. It's true, I don't wear my seatbelt AND I removed my Gen I Airbag wheel in favor of an Mtech II wheel. I really should wear my belt, but I just don't. No reason, just lazy I guess.

The Gen I bags are notorious for causing as much injury as they did help people. Do some searches on airbags and lawsuits and you'll find tons of fodder on the subject. I remember hearing stories of decapitations of small children even. Those first gen really deployed with so much force and without regard to weight of occupant and distance from them, so they caused lots of injuries. So, I feel much SAFER without mine in front of me. My cousin works at a junkyard and they occasionally go out and set airbags off with a shotgun. Like the others here said, they explode with lots of force. Do you really want something going off in YOUR face that can hurl a truck bed 50 feet into the air??? I think NOT.

Mtech II wheels are 365mm on the smaller versions and are definitely worth the price of admission.
