    ...on my '87 325i manual trans?

      Straddle the center console, grip the knob with both hands, then while looking straight down at it, give it a good hard jerk with both hands.

      If all goes well you'll have you know off and a bloody nose or black eye.

        ^exactly, try bending over it as well, it will give you more leverage to yank it up and off! Good Luck!
