What is the purpose of the indentation on E30 Dashboard's?

    Hey there my R3v friends,
I hope that you're all doing well, and are psyched for the spring and convertible season! I have always wondered what the indentation on E30 Dashboard's are for. Do they have a specific purpose, or just there to put stuff in without it sliding all over the car? If anyone has info on this, please share. And if you think it's a stupid question, and have some mean, unhelpful comments on it, please keep them to yourself, thank you.

No, it's not for putting knick knacks.

It's for putting projectiles that will rocket around your car on the first turn you take.

^^^ +1. I love how you can put stuff in it and get it to fly at an open window when going around a bend.

I tell people that if they want to adjust the seat... it's easier if you grab onto the ledge of the indentation. Having said that, that wouldn't work in my coupe... fixed back seats with fixed adapters lol.

actually it could be for the passenger to hold onto. if you sit in the passenger seat and put your fingers over the edge, that's what it feels like anyway..

That conjures up a strong image of PT Cruiser, thanks.

I'm in this camp. In fact there should be an ignition disable feature that prevents the car from starting if anything is left there

That actually happened to me! Those are the exact screws I lost, too.

Most of my car had been disassembled for an engine swap and I had just put the bare minimum back together to test fire/drive the car. A couple miles in I started getting cocky and took a turn sort of hard. Then I heard the unmistakable sound of a handful of fasteners sliding across that pocket and as I looked over, I could see the last of them exiting the window.

This thread goes to show how few have working AC...

I lost a pair of polarized ray bans from those damn indentations once. Never again.

Curious what the A/C connection is...I have A/C and still don't see much use for it. The one in my 2002 was at least deep enough to hold stuff, but that's because it didn't have forward vents. I'd make that trade-off any day.
