    Headliner Replacment

I have some ideas for my headliner. I know you have to take out the rear window, and windshield. I am going to paint my car, so i might as well redo the head liner. What glue you you guys recomend. Do you reccomend me glueing the material to the factory one, then sewing it in certain places. Is it hard to remove and reinstall the headliner? TIA

It is pretty challenging to replace the headliner, but you seem to have a knack for DIY stuff, so you may have a better outcome.

Do not use heavy and thick materials, like true suede, as the bars that hold the headliner up will not be able to support it.

Also, it is not like common headliners that are attached to a piece of board, it is the older types that have rods to hold it up, so although glue will help, it may seep through.

Good luck. Jordan has a write up somewhere as well.

I plan on using a form of plaid material, not sure what kind yet. So there is a frame that holds it together? That helps a lot.

Go to realoem.com and check out the schematics regarding the headliner...that may give you a better idea of what you're dealing with...

...honestly, its one bitch of a job to do.

There are two rods that hold up the headliner over the back seat area - the rest of it is held up by glue. If it is a two door, you'll have to pull the rear side windows out. If it has a sunroof, it has to be glued there, as well, although there is a metal bar that will hold it in place. It has to be glued at the rear window, the c-pillars, over the doors, at the sunroof, and at the front window.

It's not a fun job, and getting it to fit properly without sags is a PITA.

I used 3M Super Trim Adhesive.

Oddly enough, no pictures of the finished job. :( I'll rectify that when I can.

                  +1.

No idea, but it won't be cheap.

was this for them to do everything? what if someone was to remove old liner and they just need to pay for the new one to get put in.

You're going to drive your car to them with no glass in it? And the sunroof in pieces?

To put in the new headliner you need to remove and reinstall everything anyway - actually taking out the old headliner is such a small part of the job that I doubt you would see any difference in cost, and I would probably charge you more just for the hassle of having to figure out the puzzle of how the parts all go back together without seeing them come out.

John?! What did I tell you!? You nut.

If I could turn back time, I would have bought an OEM black one, and had a shop do it.

And also not have gone to Massachusetts to get it.
