The only reason to upgrade them is the split second they draw a larger amount of power during startup. There are no ill effects of installing a higher fuse and nothing to worry about

EDIT: Is that even what you were asking or just if anyone has had problems with an HID install in general?

I dont think the E30 lights are good enough to house the HID bulbs, like some of the other members here who have fitted REAL Hid projectors, i would say do this instead!

Quick question I had Euro ellipsoids on my last e30 and I know they were H1's but my new E30 has the US ellipsoids. I havnt actuly looked at them yet, do the US ellipsoids use an H7 bulb? Also I want a white light, not blue, should I go with 5000 rather then 6000?

          Thanks

The ellipsoids are fine. They are projectors just like the ones the E46 comes with. My ellips project the same pattern as the E46 save for the euro cutoff.
            Im now E30less.

i got the parts from a car that upgraded at work, and yes, i had to mold the bulbs to the housings, it took a few hours at work, but i did it well, and no biggie. they've held up for over a year now without any issue at all.

I think you will find that they are totally different, the spread of light on the E46 is much better than the E30. We are talking about late 80s technology which are about 30% less efficient than the E46.

Andrew's right, e46 projectors are superior. I have US ellips with hids and i want to convert the projectors to ones meant for hids.

The US ellipsoids have 9006 on the low beams. If you want white you'll probably be better off with 5k instead 6k. 6k is a little more hmmmm bluish. Here's a breakdown I've found from umnitza's website

                      Picture break down:
                      3K, 3K, 4K, 4K,
                      5K, 5K, 6K, 6K,
                      8K, 8K, 10K, 10K,
                      12K, 12K, 3K, 3K,

What is involved in making projector lights mount correctly to a sealed-beam housing? Is it as simple as drilling some holes in the housing?

                            no you need ellips.

anyone used PureVison or heard of them...they are on ebay and they are located in Raleigh so I could go pick them up ;) I just don't want to get a crappy set though...maybe I should look in junkyards for something for like 5series ones? I talked to one of their people and I can get the kit for $200...do you think thats worth it?

I have a question about headlights. Right now I have the Euro Ellipsoids, and I'm trying to contemplate on whether to get the Euro Smileys, or the Angel Eyes that are available for my E30. Which one should I get, and why? Plus, where can I get either one?

                                angel eyes =

if you have euro ellipsoids, you already have euro smileys, unless you got the ones without the smiley cutout. in any case they are the same thing. but you could also have US ellipsoids, which are definitely not the same..
