you wonder why some cars HID's look a lot brgihter than others is because of the optics in the projectors. It does have a little to do with bulb selection, but newer cars HID's look brighter because the projectors are much better. Also with the non HID projectors you get a hot spot in the middle of your pattern were is it brighter than the rest of the pattern, thats why i put S4 Valeo projectors in my housings... currently looking at some more advanced bi-xenon projectors, but as of now i am happy with it.

check out HIDplanet.com for any questions about HID... there is much better information provided there.

There was a post (I think here, but I cannot for the life of me find it) of a guy in england who had put e46 projectors in the bosch lowbeam housing... it looked really nice.

someone asked for a diy writeup and he refused... I guess he charges $ to do it.

does anyone remember the post and have any thoughts about doing it / the benefits?

                (kidding)

I have the mcculloch hid kit in my bosch euro ellips... basically the same as hellas... it works really well, I have no complaints.

I would love to see a quality writeup on putting the e46 hid projectors into our E30 headlamps tho...

anybody feeling like a junkyard hero?

You can make an adapter to fit either the US or Euro ellipsoids without too much work for the e46 Bosch projectors. The US ellipsoids are easier only requiring grinding of the projector to make it smaller and a bit of grinding the plastic in the light. The euros require more modification to the housing to get the adapter to properly fit. If I get some time I can see about taking some pictures.

So, let's get this strait, you can put the projector housings from an e46 into the us ellips housing with little trouble?

Taking them apart the difference I could distinguish that the E46 cutoff was made of plastic, had a small jump up from left to right, and arched out on both sides. Beyond that (and the obvious mechanicals for the high beams) they were similar. A single solid projector eye, a suspended source, and a cutoff plate.

And I have compared them back to back. An 05 330 with HID and mine. Of course, mine are also brand new versus containing many years of dirt, abuse and the old diffusion pattern.
                                Im now E30less.
