Junkyard find .. Are these Rare???

found a 84 318 E30 at the yard and it had these round metal mesh rally /race lens protectors. Seen these on old Porsche rally cars and some CSLs but never on an E30???

You should ask the guys at E30tech, they'll eat this up.

      ;)

To answer your question, I think 5.25" lenses were pretty common so I'd be surprised if they were E30-specific.

no they aren't rare. they aren't even E30 specific - I had on my 1981 Oldsmobile. They were square but basically the same thing - popular aftermarket in the 80's.

I have a set on my XJ made by Cal Customs and a spare set made by Dick Cepek. They made them for all different size headlights. Rare, no.. Harder to find, yes... They are headlight stone protectors. I know some corvair guys was looking for a set a while back.

I feel like I could totally make a set from a set of headlight trim rings I have laying around!

It was brought up over on e30tech that the wire could be in the way on these. here's an sealed beam with the retaining ring in place. You can see how far out the light sticks out.

The OP's picture shows the wire inside the ring. Wonder what headlights was in the car he got them off of?

Here's the ones on my Jeep. They use a tab to clip the guard on.

how large do the stones have to be to make these useful?

Small boulders! I've been running LaminX lens covers for the last year and a half, they still look great and protect from the sand that I'm more worried about...

They are little under 1/2" openings. So basically just protection from small pea gravel. And besides if anything larger was flying up at the front of your vehicle, you have more to worry about then a chipped headlight..
