Oh, allright, I misunderstood your original serial setup, I thought you were programming it directly from the serial port via ICSP. I'm familiar with RS232.

After a bit of looking, programming almost directly from serial actually *is* possible, but needs some extra circuitry to get voltages high enough to put the PIC into burn mode. Looks like I can avoid the 300 dollar hockey puck from Microchip.

Yeah man, get yourself a PICKit! I even programmed some SOICs with it by soldering 30ga wires to the leads...very carefully!

        Do you work for Agilent?

Edit: NM, it seems you're in school. Just noticed the Agilent analyzer and jumped to conclusions. Forgive me for I have not read the entire thread before posting.

I WISH I was still in school (although being broke & having homework sucked). I finished a few years ago & am now working in the consumer electronics industry (hence after-hours access to fun tools). I wonder if Agilent employees get good discounts on stuff...I'll have to look into that lol.

I'd buy one too... You took a very different path than I did after finishing ME. I always wish I had been an EE so I could better tackle cool projects like this.

Having a background in ME is actually super useful when mixed with EE stuff. In general, MEs are going to have slightly better fabrication & design skills, which is actually super important when taking an electrical design off the computer & onto a board. You can be the greatest designer ever, but if you don't know how to actually BUILD your design (or have other people doing that for you), you aren't getting too far!

Just a fast update...I have been working on the CD43 after hours in the lab. There is some progress being made in interpreting/decoding the button & LCD data. The protocol seems like it is way too complicated for what the faceplate does. I guess Germans program a lot like they make mechanical devices...incredibly precise, and more complicated than they need to be to get the job done!

(one of my favorite examples of this is the use of fiber-optic cabling for the back lighting on the feet/front/defrost HVAC sliders of the E30)

                      Progress...

I have all the key & display bits worked out for the faceplates. Now I need to make sure that I can physically fit them together in such a way that they can still fit into a single-DIN slot. After that I will start working on the circuit & microcontroller firmware.

I'll trade you...this for your "baby S42." I have the cash for the MM Rally M42 now, but I think my GF would kill me if I used that much money on a motor when we are looking at buying a house lol. Did you get any other MM stuff (tranny/diff/flywheel)? My tranny is on the way out & I was thinking about one of theirs.

hey man, I did get the flywheel, but my whole car situation is currently spread out over a couple of different cars, haha.

                              your work looks fantastic!!

Just out of curiosity, how much interest IS there in this? At this point, the only head unit options are the KD-HDR60 & KD-AHD69. I looked at a lot of different ones, & the JVC ones seemed like the only option because they have 11 character main displays, as does the CD43. A lot can be done in the firmware of the "translator" to deal with stiff that doesn't directly translate from one device to the other, but I really wanted to avoid having to mess around with scrolling text (that may already be scrolling from the source) that came from a 12-14 character screen onto an 11 character one.
