Speaker Replacement for Premium Sound Speakers?

Should I replace the individual speakers in the Premium Sound enclosures or should I just replace the entire speaker pod? If I replace the individual speakers, what should I be looking to buy? Or are the Premium speakers better than anything that I would replace them with?

Also, how does the combination of kick panel mid-range and door-mounted tweeter work? Is their wiring arrangement similar to the rear speaker pods?

I currently have a JVC CD player head unit that is wired to the Premium speakers, bypassing the OEM amp. This work was done by the PO.

    Thanks in advance!

You are gona have a lot of people tell you to search this topic.
But to summarize for you, stock premium speakers are really nice speakers. Like, you won't find anything better aftermarket. Your best bet is to install an aftermarket amp to power everything and it will sound awesome. Or if you really don't want an amp search r3v for the stereo wiring thread by stereoinstaller1 and wire your head unit back through the factory amp

Stock premium speakers were amazing 20 years ago, now they're worn out junk most likely.

CDT makes some great speakers for not a lot of money, might check them out?

Exactly the answer that I was looking for.

I've been reading a lot and I can't find anyone that has replaced their Premium Sound speakers; just a lot of people being told to upgrade to Premium Sound speakers. I happened to recently remove and replace the rear speakers (dyeing the carpet) and I found myself wondering if new speakers wouldn't be better. It seems that I'm good with what I have.

Now, I'm off to the couch cushions to find money for a Lukebox, sub and amps!

I like CDT's. I have a set of 6.5's in my coupe. I retrofitted components in front (tweeters mounted externally on the sails) and enlarged the deck openings in the rear and they sound great with a Sony head unit. Too bad they dont fit :-)

Running off the head unit power should always be the last resort. most of them have mad heat issues and are cheap class D amps, this really limits the quality of the audio. before you get all crazy changing out the speakers and housings. get a quality amp to run your system off of. from there, just replacing your rears with quality 6x9s makes a huge difference. and for the front, leave it stock, unless you are really wanting to do a lot of work and spend some $. Stereoinstaller1 makes incredible sub boxes for our cars, and thats the only way to get full rich sound.

My near future plan is to get a decent sub and a Lukebox, along with a decent 5 channel amp for the Premium speakers.

A good couch search should provide adequate loot.

If anything I would upgrade the front. I installed some 3 way 6x9 in the rear deck and it overpowered the fronts. I put some nice 6.5" behind the kick panel, and that made a huge difference, the bass actually had some kick to it

                    Hi,
Can you add some pics of the 6.5" fronts mounted ?
Did you have to modify anything to make them fit ?
Did you put in any enclosures behind the speakers ?
                    Thanks

That can give you a hint of what modifications might be like. Im about to pick my project back up as I was able to secure a new job pretty quickly.

Do not forget if you go the route Im going you will still need to find a place to mount the crossovers. Premium sound stuff has them built in. I have no doubt that premium speakers can sound very good but if you look around Im sure you can find "Better sounding" speakers pretty easily. Its very hard for anyone to judge what your dealing with over the internet. And to be frank Im not sure how "plastic" tweeters can out preform silk or proper titanium tweets.

Just so you know, Premiums are not in any way some kind of incredible speaker, they just have the fattest bass of any 5.25" ever made. The tweeter is certainly nothing special, and the crossover is a turd. However, compared to the few choices you have in 5.25" component speakers, they work best if you don't have a sub.

The point is IF you have a subwoofer, there are plenty of choices, feel free to go aftermarket. Your speakers wont need to make bass so just about anything will work fine.
