I have an alarm with power locks. I forget which company makes it, but I had Luke (StereoInstaller1) do the install. It is the same one Jordan has. It has been one of the best investements for my car. Other perfromance mods are fun, but for a daily this gets used all the time and makes things easier.

I agree with DarkWing, I'm extremely happy with my alarm, an Audiovox 996A. I can't quite tell you how I lived without keyless entry and remote start before, but I never want to go back. I also had Luke install it, great guy. I recommend the alarm, only $160 on ebay.

I need to get one, luckily nobody has messed with my car yet. An alarm costs about as much as a new window, so figuring the cost of repairing the damage from a break in, the alarm pays for itself (my friend had $200 worth of damage done to his car, so they could steal $1.50 in change and an old jacket). My insurance company also gives a discount for anti-theft devices, I'm sure most do.

My M5 has a viper alarm with remote locks and all that fun stuff. Im probably getting a GPS tracking for the E30 when its done and maybe the M5. Costs like 250 bucks and if your cars stolen, you can go to your computer and find out exactly where it is live...or just call the cops and tell them

I think car alarms are pointless. If someone wants to break into/steal your car that bad, they're going to do it regardless of whether or not there's an alarm going off, all they have to do is disable it once they get inside. No one would even really notice that it was going off and then stopped, car alarms go off for no reason all the time, and no one ever pays any attention to them.

I don't know, that's just my feelings on them.

Agreed. Unless the theives want the whole car which is not likely b/c body parts for our cars are not as lucrative as the hondas or other jap cars. They could go for a joy ride, then in that case it'll probably be totalled. I would probably go with a GPS system. Isn't this the same as lojack?

I'm trying to decide on an alarm for myself as well. Nothing fancy, just remote lock and a chirp, to keep the petty thieves away.

                      Keep it slideways!!

I had a compustar on my last car, going to get it on the touring when I bring it back out in spring too. If someone even touches your car, it pages you. so you know instantly. In some cases, before the alarm even goes off (it has a dual stage shock sensor. if someone touches it lightly (to a setting of your choice) the car beeps and pages you. then if they really mess with it, the alarm goes off, and it pages you witha different code).

it saved the stereo in my last car on numerous occasions.

I don't think they're pointless. While I agree if someone really wants it they're probably going to get it, the purpose of security devices is to deter thiefs and encourage them to look for an easier target. The alarm isn't what's going to stop someone from stealing my car, it's the page I get when someone triggers it. I guarantee the threat of bodily harm at the hands of the vehicle owner is a very large deterrent. The single most important thing to remember is to lock your valuables in your trunk and keep them out of plain sight.

I have the viper 550. Its alarm, keyless, and remote start.

an alarm is just another deterrent. The little flashing light on my console serves as a deterrent to would-be thieves. Also if you hook it up to the E30s dual horns its kinda hard to ignore. The glass-break is a nice feature, it means you dont have to wait for them to open the door or shake the car to set it off.

As for disabling it, good luck. I removed the cluster and hid it up in the dash. Even knowing where its at its a good 15 minutes to get to it.

Also some insurance policies take it into account.
                              Im now E30less.
