can a bad SI board interfere w odometer?

I just replaced all 4 gears in my VDO odometer. I can turn the gears smoothly by hand, but the odo doesn't work when installed.

My SI board is flaky (I'm quite sure it's dying). Can a bad SI board cause the odometer to not work?

No, if the speedo works the odometer should work as well. If it doesn't, then there is an issue with the motor or the gears.

The wiring going to the speed sensor in the diff often gets brittle and breaks, I'd start by looking there. If the speedo works however, then something else is wrong.

        OK, thanks guys.

The speedo works fine. I guess I will have to look at the circuit board next.

VDO gears are very easy to get backward. Make sure that you are meshing the gears together and not over tightening the cover.
