I used duplicolor trim and self etching primer with good results. I wanted to add that I have tried to remove drip rails from cars and couldn't do it without damaging it so I just masked and sprayed it on the car. It's really not that bad of a job and will save u the trouble of removing and reinstalling. Powdercoat looks good and will last but $100 vs $15 is a big difference and u can paint and repaint the trim on the car. So another plus 1 for duplicolor paint.Last edited by reelizmpro; 05-28-2012, 06:18 PM. -
If you have pop-out rear windows, you need to get inside the car and remove the coat hanger hook--pull hard, it'll come out--remove the seat belt mounting bolt and the round trim plug at the bottom to access the two nuts inside. Now have a helper hold the window from the outside or it could shift and scratch the paint. You'll need an 8mm socket and be careful not to drop the nuts down inside the car. Then at the back hinge just pop off the plastic cover to access the two screws that mount it to the car.
If you have fixed rear windows:

hey how did you get the window out. i need to get mine out to tint and shadowline it???As others have mentioned, Duplicolor Trim Paint is the best match to the original satin paint. I actually took my trim off and had it powdercoated since I was having my car painted, but the rear quarter window lower pieces don't come off, so I decided to paint them to match. Didn't paint the rest of the frame, just the lower piece. Sanded the etching primer after the last coat and then sanded the trim paint just before the last coat. You can't tell the difference.

Everything pictured cost you $100? Wow, I imagined powder coating to be much more expensive. I'll have to go get some quotes around me when I go to shadowline.Leave a comment:

I respectfully disagree with that. They very much do come apart and well worth it!As others have mentioned, Duplicolor Trim Paint is the best match to the original satin paint. On a side note I think powder coat is the way to go. Mine looks great and wont have to be redone.
Take the effort and do it right. Will cost you about $100

I did mine last week. I actually removed the trim/drip rails and sprayed it with Satin Black Krylon to match my grills. If youre removing them, be very careful the clips are 20+ years old, be patient with that flathead.Leave a comment:

It took me about 4 hours from set up to clean up. Im pretty pleased with the results. I have a couple spots where it peeled, but it was too bad. I think Ill get a can of the dipping stuff and just brush up the mess up parts. I did it while the pieces were on the car. Here are some Pros and Cons of doing that.
I used Plasti-Dip
Pros:
-Dont have to take it apart
-No worry about breaking the trim pieces.
-Less time (maybe Ive never taken of the trim)
Cons:
-The pieces arent 100% black.
-Cant get inside the nooks and crannys
-When peeling tape, you could peel off the paint
-If not covered properly, theres over spray. (Had some on the windows comes off with alcohol)
I also took off the front turn signals and sprayed those while I was waiting for the other coats to dry. While I was taping up my windows I deiced to do the trim part in between the doors, instead of waiting and re-taping everything
Total Cans used for Trim, Signals, and Test pieces: 1 and theres like 1/8 left in the can.
Total Tape Rolls: 6/8s
Time: ~4 hours
Sunburns achieved: One on the upper back/lower neck. :D

I did this today on my vert...looks WAY better, good lord! I used 200 grit, Duplicolor self-etching primer and trim paint..nice results, although I dropped one piece during re-installation and jacked up a corner.
The trim comes off very nicely on the verts too, btw...very quick job. You'll spend way more time sanding.Leave a comment:
