If you get the alternator belt tight it will hold the pulley from moving and then just keep the alternator from spinning and you can get the fan off easy.

Edit: I didn't realize how difficult people make this job haha

Mechanics absolutely love to over torque the fan clutches. Even a light-as-can-be alternator belt will slip (believe me, I've tried)

But you are forgiven, because I cannot stop staring at this:

Haha alright it might not apply in all cases but it worked just fine for me. I was going to suggest welding a steel rod to the pulley but that's just overkill

I'm doing this and spilled coolant everywhere. Plastic drop cloth and a storage bin should be added to the list.

          And kity litter

Man i just did my head gasket and i cant figure out why it won't start now WTF? Besides from what I already how to fix next (crankshaft seals) this happens to me =(

            Any help?
As I try to start it up the car the Idle Control Valve hums even if the key isnt turned. Makes me wonder if that killed my battery in the past.
Anyways, is there something i may have for gotten to do? I have double checked my work, triple (quadruple) check. I had to just to make sure TDC was correct.

For a reference on what a Idle Control Valve is here is a link:
It sits right next to the throttle body.

CPS was working prior to timing belt I don't have a spare to try against but I did have spark on cylinder one as mentioned above, and it is in the right spot.

i started doing the timing belt on my friends e30 and i noticed when the head is at tdc and the crank is ahead . could this explain why his idle is at 1k-1.5k all the time and smelling lke gas all the time. im kinda worried if i set the crank on bdc its going to run weird. any suggestions?
btw what kinda sealant are you guys using for the water pump?

Great thread. Needs to be stickied.

Couple of questions myself. I'm planning on doing my TB soon. Do I really need the thin wrench? I tried an UltraPro 32mm, and it seemed to fit on the nut nicely and only costs about $20. Thoughts?
