    DIY - Wheel Refinishing

Sorry, i dont have any in progress pictures.

    Need:
    Paste or Gel paint stipper
    Duplicolor Wheel paint: Silver
    Duplicolor Wheel paint: Graphite
    Duplicolor Wheel clear coat
    Coarse Steel wool
    Fine Steel wool
    Masking tape

    1. Paint on the gel stripper, let sit for however long it asks then wash off with water. DO NOT use a wire brush cause it will take off the primer and leave the surface rough even after the wheel is painted.

    2. Repeat process and this time make sure the wheels are clean. I used a soft cloth with dish washing detergent to clean the paint stripper once all the paint is removed. Let the wheels dry, you dont want any water on them when painting.

    3. Use the coarse steel wool to remove any paint that was not removed by the stripper. Also smooth down any areas that show imperfections.

    4. Paint the outer lip with the lighter silver color. Let the paint dry and sand it smooth with the fine steel wool. If the paint is taken up by sanding then let it dry for a little longer.

    5. Put another coat on the silver lip, sand again if not smooth. You can do this as long as you wish.

    6. Tape off the outside lip once the paint is dry. Take your time on this step as it will make the wheels look much better once its done.

    7. Sand any areas where the silver paint may of collected. Again, smoother the better.

    8. Paint the inner circle with the Graphite paint. Just like the lip, sand with fine steel wool and paint again. It can become a very painful job to get into the smaller areas. So if you didnt like cleaning baskets, you wont like painting them!

    9. Once you are happy with the center of the wheel sit back and enjoy! Then hit it with as many layers of clear coat as you can manage! The more the better, of course let it dry first! I found out the hard way that if you dont let the clear dry that it WILL flake up.

Heres some before and after pictures:

If you wanted polished lips you would do the polish instead of the paint on the lips and everything would work, right?

            probably great.

One tip I've found that works great for us lazy folks:
-If you're painting wheels with the tires still on them, and bunch of notecards stuck between the tire and rim is a fast and easy way to keep overspray off of the rubber
