Well, I found a replacement gear from a guy in Spain on Ebay. $11 w/ shipping. Heck of a better deal than $25 +.

well, after i removed all the gears (read they fell out of the damn housing) i started spinning the gears by hand. after about 2 min I had an epiphany. using an air nozzle (this particular one had a sqeeze grip and a long narrow outlet tube kind of like something you'd see at a dentists office or a lockpick gun) i pointed it at the appropriate gear and direction of travel and spun my mileage back. BE FOREWARNED - DO NOT APPLY TOO MUCH AIR PRESSURE OR IT WILL BREAK. Ask me how I know. I was going backwards from 210K and ended up having to go forward through 999K. That sucked. But it was kind of cool watching 1000 miles go by every 20 sec.well, i know theres some trick by using a drill.. but i dont know the details of that so dont try it.. haha
but the only way to really correct is to turn those gears.. they all work together to move the trip meter.. then the miles move too.. if you do it by hand, im sure it'd be a couple hours or maybe days.. haha
i forgot where i read that drill trick.. cuz i guess it makes it spin faster.. but yeah, just do it by hand.. it'll get fun once in a whileLast edited by BimmerBall; 11-04-2006, 09:28 AM.Comment

Rather than buying the gear for $25 and waiting a few days for it to arrive, I decided to go to a hobby shop and buy a bag of assorted plastic gears for $10. I had to drill out the center of the 12-tooth gear in order to get it to fit on the shaft but it did the job!Comment

Hey guys just read this DIY. After reading I decided to go grab my replacement cluster and check out my odometer. Sure enough, when I pulled it out and took off the clear plastic cover, covering the gears I found this, obviously taken out.

So the placement of the orange gear's location is represented by the orange ring, the black gear's location is represented by the white ring. The yellow ring is the little brown gear, obviously chewed up and spit out by time.

Does anyone know the part numbers for these and or the names so I can figure out how to get some replacements.

Ok well I found the part numbers easily enough. E1, E2 and E3 are what I need. Anyone have any idea where to get them cheap? Would prefer new replacements rather than going to junk yard. But for $25-35 a piece, eff that.DaveComment

Yeah I know how you feel but you really do not want to use used gears as they will do the same thing sooner than later. And you would be smart to go ahead and replace all the gears while you are at it as if you replace only broken ones and old one might break and damage a new gear or gears. It sucks they cost that much but it is what it is ....Comment

my gears where blown apart like the pic above i replaced the gears with the right vdo style e1-2-3 gears... but ive noticed that now my trip odometer reads a mile a little less the one rear mile..
