turbo m20 e30 popped ignition coil

alright been building my turbo e30 for a few weeks now and finally put in my megasquirt pnp and while the ignition was on and I'm trying to get my computer find the ecu I hear a pop and smoke coming from the engine bay so I shut everything down and disconnect the battery. find out its my ignition coil, black tar oozing out and its hotter then the sun! I haven't even had the car running at all yet. for some reason the coil was getting power while the key was on. I did extent the power and ground wires roughly 12''. I'm not sure what to look at now. possibly the wiring? does the body of the coil ground its self to the chassis? thanks for the help.

Did you change any ignition settings in the base tune of the MSPNP? Especially the spark output "going high" or "going low"?

The coil always gets +12V when the ignition switch is in start or run. The coil gets grounded by the ECU's ignition driver transistor when it's time to generate a spark for a set amount of time (dwell). Test continuity from the coil terminal to a ground point with the ignition on and off. It should not change. If you see continuity to ground with the key on, something is wrong with either your settings or your MS hardware. If you see continuity to ground with the key off something is wrong with your wiring or MS hardware. You should probably inspect your coil wiring since you say you altered it and melted down a coil, inspect the harness too and the ignition switch wires to make sure nothing else melted during this shorted condition.

It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the basics of MS operation and your car's wiring diagrams when modifying the car like this to avoid further damage.

I actually figured it out. when I extended the coil wires (+) & (-), I had soldered the positive and didn't know the casing wires are actually grounded and some of them had been soldered aswell, so I fixed that and kept them separate and connected to an msd blaster coil and it works great now. car runs awesome thanks to Jack Stoll for tuning it!
