Alright, so a couple more bolts and it's all 100% apart. I am dumb and going to go through with this rebuild just because lol

I am going to drop the block off this week for a machine shop to blast/clean and check. They would know what to do, but to not sound like a clueless n00b what should I ask them to do besides cleaning it and rehoning the cyl. walls ?

Should I bring the bare crank also to check what bearings I need to order and what other things can be done to the crank ? I am not trying to spend a lot of money on it as it's pointless, I am only doing this as a leason and to build a little relationship with a shop.

Rods I should be able to re-use, I'll order new bearings and new oil pump, chain and tentioner.

What should I do with pistons ? Order new oem pistons or is there a good deal somewhere on new maybe lighter pistons that won't require any modifactions to the head chamber etc?

This is going to be my first engine build / swap to learn on before I touch the m30.

Bottom end, crank and rods are going to the machine shop tomorrow for inspection and cleaning. I notice very little wear on the crank, and cylinder walls still have cross hatching.

                  Chains FTW lol..

I really need to find a good book on this, I don't know what the right procedure is for a good rebuild , specifically on piston rings and bearings / measurements... ugh.

Well, dropped it off today, should find out in a few days if the block/rods/pistons/crank is good or not. Should come out clean, then I'll order new bearings/gaskets and try to put together my first rebuild hehe.

Alright, so crank is good, block is ok other than 2 cylinder having a little bit of rust inside the cylinder wall. I asked if they can just rehone it, and he said it won't be 100%. Machine shop recommended that I get new pistons, and they bore the block over 20 over, it will only be $50 more in labor. So it's a no brainer in terms of labor to do it right.

So, now I am looking into what options I have in terms of pistons, do MaxSils come in different sizes ? If I just order a set of MaxSils for 84 m10b18 they won't be the right size right ? Shop would prefer to have pistons on hand to make sure everything fits correctly...I wish I could just tell them what size to go with and then I order pistons to match w/o having to order a CUSTOM set of pistons. I want something off the sheft.

Doh. It's alright, I paid $200 for the whole engine, spend $300 on the head rebuild and looking at another $350 for the bottom end rebuild , plus 300-400 on new pistons/ring set and maybe 200-300 for bearings, gaskets, bolts, nuts. So about 1500 or so in the end, no sense to start all over, will do better with next build.

We'll see. I am pricing everything I need out now, damn it adds up quick even for a small 4 cyl rebuild... gaskets, bolts, oil pump, chains, tensioner kit, etc etc etc... Maybe some 2002 soul will buy it in the end for 1/2 the price lol

did you back cut the valves per the discussion last week? easy 10-15% flow improvements at low valve lift.
