I have an 8/88 build date on my 325i. Getting some projects ready and second up to front suspension is new fuel tank and pump(s)? I didn't think to much about it since rebuilding, until reading that the late 87 build dates converted to the single in tank pump. What would having the dual pick up/ pressure pump mean?

The fuel filter can be in the engine bay on those early cars but never the external fuel pump. That's always in front of the drivers read wheel. It does sound like things have been changed. Are we talking about a convertible? Are you sure the car is an 8/88 build?"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

Somebody has modified it for sure. Maybe their original fuel system died and they swapped it from an early model? who knows. no 1988 build dates came with dual pumps, and they definitely weren't mounted in the engine bay.
maybe the in-tank pump is a stock '88, and the one in the engine bay is aftermarket.
