88 build date with external fuel pump?

I have an 8/88 build date on my 325i. Getting some projects ready and second up to front suspension is new fuel tank and pump(s)? I didn't think to much about it since rebuilding, until reading that the late 87 build dates converted to the single in tank pump. What would having the dual pick up/ pressure pump mean?

Dual is a low pressure, high volume intake pump (lift pump) in the gas tank and a high pressure external pump (usually right infront of the driver rear wheel).

I understand the concept, just not why the production year has it. Also my high pressure is mounted in my engine bay. My guess is some one did something dumb. ?

The fuel filter can be in the engine bay on those early cars but never the external fuel pump. That's always in front of the drivers read wheel. It does sound like things have been changed. Are we talking about a convertible? Are you sure the car is an 8/88 build?

No, it's a coupe. 95 percent sure on the build date. I'll run the vin again. The fuel filter is outside the tank, driver side tucked up before the tire.

I'm with you on this one. How does the wiring and plumbing look? It's hard to fake the wiring in particular...

Wonder what's in your tank, if anything?

Wiring has been a nightmare if being honest. Fuel relay is jumped to the high pressure pump to provide power. Not sure what's in the tank. If anything. My guess is its a retrofit pre 88 with both pumps but I will pull the cover and find out. Lol

Somebody has modified it for sure. Maybe their original fuel system died and they swapped it from an early model? who knows. no 1988 build dates came with dual pumps, and they definitely weren't mounted in the engine bay.

maybe the in-tank pump is a stock '88, and the one in the engine bay is aftermarket.
