Piston ring end gap too wide...

    Hello
I have JE forged pistons with JE proseal rings, they have a 0.4mm minimum ring end gap I grinded one top ring gap too wide (about 0.65mm). Others are about 0.45-0.5mm. Is this anything to worry about, or should i just leave it as it is. Do i need to get new rings? This is a high compression NA engine with e85 fuel.

Yeah, i put the bottom end together already. I staggered the ring gaps 180 degrees from each other.
i'll loose a hp or two, but i guess it's better than having a too tight gap and blowing your engine.
I feel kinda embarrassed that i overgapped the ring, but i don't think it will happen ever again ;)

You would want .005" per inch of bore dia top and.0055 " per inch of bore dia 2nd
        At minimum.

Yes as a thumb rule, but some piston manufacturers may recommend smaller values for N/A engine. Better read instructions of manufacturer as primary source of information.

Unless I was racing in a very tight group, I'd use it too-

you're looking at a TINY loss in ring seal, at worst.

Far better than leaving it too tight!

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

If you end up using it. Put the piston with the wider ring gap in no.6 more heat more expansion ;).
