    Rough idle caused by valve cover breather tube?

    Hello everyone I am posting on here for the first time in hopes of getting my 97 BMW 325is back up and running. I recently did a head gasket job on my e30 and everything went smoothly up until I wanted to start it up, it start up great and sounds great for the first 2 second but afterward it jumps between 1,500-2,500rpm's. While I was trying to diagnose the issue I pinched the breather hose coming from the valve cover going to the throttle body and the car began to run perfect but as soon as I unpinch the breather tube it starts to run rough again. The tube itself is brand new and I did not see any type of valve on the inside of the valve cover so I am confused as to what is going on.

    sounds like a vacuum leak..

      check all your hoses and make sure that they are tight and sealed. Then unplug your battery to reset the dme. Clean your ICV real good with some brake clean or contact cleaner. Make sure moves freely when you shake it. Put the ICV back on and connect your battery and start it. It will idle rough for a bit at first then it should level out. Also after driving for a bit everything should relearn it's tables.
      Also you could have a vacuum leak at the valve cover. The gasket not sealing or cover not on tight enough. Did you use some of the RIGHT STUFF on your shaft plugs?

        Thank you for that information, I will look more into that but as for the RIGHT STUFF on the shaft plugs I did not do since I am not sure what that means.

          How hard is it to replace that valve cover breather hose? It kind of disappears under the intake manifold.
          Do you have to remove the intake manifold to replace it?

            nah you can get it in and out. its not the most fun but i did mine a few weeks ago and just took a bit of fiddling.
