    additional thermostat

on a scale of crucial to who gives a crap how important is the additional heater thermostat by the heater core pipes at the fire wall ? it looks like i accidentally deleted mine lol.

i just installed a refreshed m20. i got new hoses and after i'd figured out the routing and installed the hoses and engine wire harness, i realized i deleted the additional thermostat. i could put it back in but i don't wanna undo a day and half worth of work to get at it. it was kind of a dealer hack install to begin. you have to cut up your hoses to install.

Not crucial and something we delete on most cars we service.

I think it was installed to prevent hot coolant pouring on your knees when the engine overheats.

yeah it was an added safety item. the install uses a plastic t and hacks into the hoses. it's not something that inspires confidence itself.

edit: it's impossible to find a pic of one installed, and new hoses are configured to delete it.

Most that I've seen are metal, and there are no pics because the bypass loop is massively in the way of everything, so they get deleted PDQ.

it sort of sits in the bypass loop. i configured it with the old hoses to identify wth it was. the valve itself is metal but it loops in to the T shaped return hose with a plastic t and curved hose, and requires cutting into both the T and the S shaped hose from the back of the head.

install would be a shit. probably need to pull the engine harness back off the passenger side to get access. that's how i got it routed correct even with the regular hoses.

The ORIGINAL retrofit installation called for cutting chunks out of the original hoses,
so it's no surprise that there aren't special hoses for it.

I suspect BMW lost a lawsuit in some US state, and with predictable Germanic efficiency,
said, "Vell, ve vill fix that for you, den." And did.

I've seen one, and the hoses were certainly cut with a matknife.
