Do you know how to identify if it is a Hartge head?

That's odd it say's H23 right on it and H27's were not available till later after the H26.

I would assume Ryan will chime in on this.

That head is off a 83/84 H23. My head is stamped the same way (I own Ryans old car). In 84 they only made the H23 or H26 based on the 731 head.

Why didn't your car come with the head?

So, I guess the next question is will an H23 head be a "bolt on" to a m20b25 block.

No, it's more for an eta designed piston. 731 designed head is the 323i head which many plunk onto eta's when found.

Yeah, I asked, not worth it, or not possible .

Near as I can tell, this is basically just a head built especially for, or ideal for anyway, the normal eta block. Something equivocal to slaipping on an 885 head, but you maintain good compression. With a decent cam it'd be pretty sweet. Hell even without it I'd be willing to believe it'd get 190 hp/tq at the crank.

Hartge used that head either in the H23, which was a Euro 323I bottom end with special forged piston to raise the compression to 10:1. They got 170 Bhp out of it. They also used that head in the H26 in 84 which was a 325E block and the 323I crank and rods plus custom pistons to make 190 Bhp out of around 2.5 liters. A nice lively engine. In 85 the H26 went to a straight 325I motor with the 885 head. My car still has the original 83 casting 731 head stamped by Hartge.
