    Whats this canister?? Anyone guess??

    Sorry i dont have a pic so i will describe as best i can.. Its like a 3in diameter canister that has 2 hoses going in the top and its located under the brake fluid resevoir and attached to the drivers side front wheel well. Anyways ,the reason im asking is one of the conections at the top broke off and i was checking around because i always smell fuel vapor from that area when i turn the car off. Its an m20 motor.. Thanks..

                  Is it silver or black.

                  silver is fuel filter
                  black is evap

                  If it is the fuel filter your car would not be running.

                      If it's an M20, the fuel filter is never in the engine bay. It is the charcoal canister.

                              Yup. Some early ETA's (I think) had fuel filters in the bay. I don't recall where.

                                  Hmm, you may be right. From what I knew, the M10 fuel filter was attached to the firewall somewhere. Are we talking '84 eta?

                                      Some cars had the fuel filter in the engine bay and some had it by the fuel pump in front of the drivers side rear wheel. 87 325eS had it in the engine bay and my 88 325iS, M3 and 91 vert have it in front of rear wheel. Not sure if all early cars had it in the engine bay or not.

                                          Mine (also 87) definitely does not have it in the engine bay, none of the other early ones I've seen have it there, either.

                                                      If it was the fuel filter it wouldn't be just the smell of fuel but a huge fuel spill he was noticing. The charcoal canister or evaporative emissions canister is what he is talking about.

                                                          Sorry to get back so late. Its an 87 325ic and i knowthat the fuel filter which is silver is underneath on the drivers side towards the end of the door. So that would lead me to believe its a charcoal canister.. Is that where the vapors are coming from because like i said the top of one side is broke and just sitting in there. Seems like it rusted at the connection.Is that a special order piece or can you get that locally or do you need it at all.. Thanks...
