    Stubborn valve cover leak

So, about 6 months ago I changed the oil/plugs/ did a valve adjustment on my m20.

I followed the bentley guide to a tee, but ended up with a slight oil leak from the valve cover afterwards (I used a brand new valve gasket from BMW). I'm thinking of doing another adjustment and throwing on a new gasket I've got lying around. Do you guys have any tips to avoid leaks? Should I throw some sealant along with the gasket this time?

    Thanks.

When the gasket is changed you are also supposed to change the four rubber bungs that fit into the head. The bungs don't come with the gasket (they should) and you have to get them separately. Did you do that?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      damnit... no?

On the plus side I bought a set of 4 along with the new valve gasket that I have waiting at home. I guess I'll throw them on with the gasket.

If you have an OE or VR valve cover gasket there is no need for any sealant. And using sealant will just make the job more difficult in 10k when it is time to adjust the valves again.

sorry but I disagree...a thin film, not a gooping.

Anyone else have an opinion on using sealant or not between the gasket and the head?

Also, I can't seem to find any FAQs regarding the 4 rubber plugs... I'll check my Bentley later but I'd be nice to find a DIY online with pictures etc.

                  no sealant.

but i'd use a flat razor to make sure the edges of both the cylinder head and the valve cover is truly clean. make sure its absolutely smooth to the touch.

hmmm I just looked at REAL OEM too trying to find the part# for you

                    but I didn't see it

but I know the parts are there... they are "rocker shaft plugs, x4" IIRC

Yep... I think i have the right ones sitting at home in a box. Thanks for checking, appreciate it.

I was looking for any info on installing/removing the old ones... since I don't have my Bentley with me. I can't recall how they're positioned in the head.

Once you have the valve cover off just pull them off and put the new ones in, super easy. They're not hard to access or anything.

to clarify - I'm talking about the rubber plugs, not the valve cover gasket. but to each there own.
