Start tracing from the coil towards the ignition switch and find out what is removing coil power. If the car has an aftermarket alarm that would be a likely candidate.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The car doesn't have an aftermarket alarm. Would the wires just short out like that?

get a test light, turn your key on and poke all your fuses on the left then the right of each fuse, if one has power on one side, it should have power on the other, if it doesnt replace fuse. also

with your key on, engine off make sure your CEL illuminates if not, again main relay/dme. another thing that works is if you make a jumper wire from any 12v source to fuse number 11 in the under hood you should be able to hear the pump run if you put a funnel into the filler neck on the gas tank and put your ear to it while you have a friend connect 12v feed to the fuel pump fuse. try that. if you dont hear a buzzing humming through a funnel in the filler neck change your intank pump

Is the funnel to ear concept a type of gotcha joke? I wouldn't imagine any twenty year old vehicle would have a quiet enough fuel pump to have to rig a 'listening device' to hear it. I did the jumper wire between the two posts at the fuel pump relay and could hear the pump from the front of the car, as well as the fuel circulating through the lines.

Just follow the tips jlevie is throwing out. Have you insured everything is properly grounded to the body? No overly rusted grounding connections? Its at 20+ years and rusting connections throughout are inevitable, especially those exposed on body connections.

all i was saying is if you cant hear it through the funnel, its def. not running. weather or not your pump is noisy, quiet, old, new, maybe your half deaf, i dont know. the funnel makes it easier to hear in some cases

i didnt read all the pages. but on my 1986 325es, the timing mark got knocked of the flywheel. car would crank but no start. did you check to see if that mark was still on the flywheel?

Nope, the car is in pieces, rebuilding the motor and putting a 885 head on it for shits and giggles.

Seems backwards to me to start rebuilding now. You still don't have an answer to your problem. Which sounds like an ignition issue...

                          Good luck though....

The car is long gone. I know it was backwards to go and rebuild it, but in the process most of the shit was going to get replaced.
