THIS is why you DO NOT WAIT to change your timing belt !!

I haven't had this car long and despite running amazing well & having signs of good upkeep, I was nervous about the unknown state of the TB. The seller owns an import shop and was selling it for an old customer which sounds good, BUT the AFM had a note written in touch up paint that said:

    "TB 131007"

Not good as the non-working odo (at that time) read 159k and the Autocheck put 131k at around 2002. Still I had a hard time believing such a nice car could have a 10 yo TB.

So I ordered the full range of parts and planned to take some time since I was determined to do the front seals as well given the amount leakage around the timing covers. I started the tear down this weekend. My 1st peek at the TB after removing the cap, rotor and dust cover was encouraging. The belt looked reasonable, at least from the edge and I began to wonder if it had in fact been done and I was making much ado about nothing.

Then I saw the v belts. They also looked ok...until I read the date on them and they were all made in 4-5\02. I'm actually glad now that I know Im doing this for a good reason. When I finally exposed the TB it was a bit of a shocker. Not only did it show cracks between the teeth, but the edge was chewed up in a way I cant explain. On top of that, this belt is only 11\16 wide as compared to the new belt which is 15\16 !!

I feel vindicated for my refusal to step on the gas til this was done. I now realize I may have been 1 kick down away from a blown engine. The moral of this story is: IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHEN YOUR TB WAS DONE, DO IT NOW...and dont drink and drive please :-)

hah...Im feeling pretty smart atm (aka damn lucky) and yes...I went through 3 cans of Gunk and just bought some Simple Green for that springtime fresh look. Can you imagine how depressing it would have been if that b*#@h had let go with the parts sitting in a box in my office ?

I really want to see the date on that old belt.

I tried to buy a 32mm spanner from Dicks and they are NLA which was fine since I've done 4-5 of these and never had an trouble as they should only be on hand tight. I have a pic Ill try to post tomorrow of how I did mine. As long as they arent corroded or torqued on its not hard

This is the exact same reason I refused to drive my iX further than 1 mile and go above 30MPH until I replaced the timing belt. I also was very happy when I opened it up and saw signs of wear.

I really need to do mine. I barely drive my car because I have no time to change the tb. The PO told me to listen to the TB and that if it's not making any noise (of it falling off/being loose) then you're good. All I could think was "No..if it is making noise then you're FUCKED". He claims he had an m20 go 300k on a TB, and offered to give me a 10k warranty on my 7 year old one if I paid his asking price (which I didn't).
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

                          well that's good news

Seeing a 10 year- old belt still in one piece gives me more confidence about my 5 year- old, 17,000 mile belt that needs changing next.

Going to go easy until I can get it changed soon. What a great story and thanks for sharing. Glad you caught that in time!

Just found this out the other day...it's not the rubber failing as the problem it's the structure inside. So a visual won't tell you anything (well except when it's completely shot). So the one you are looking at and seeing in bad shape is much worse internally :)

driving it easy isn't neccesarily going to "save" an old timing belt. lots of stories of timing belts letting go (due to neglect 99.999999% of the time) while sitting at a traffic light or at a low RPM.
