    Pulling an M20

So Saturday I believe I am going to pull out the m20 in my car. I have read the bentley, and I am familiar with what to disconnect harness wise. However, the actual pulling it out part has me confused.

I have access to a nice engine hoist, but no load leveler.

I have read that MR 325 has used only the front engine lift point atleast twice with success. I have a powdercoated intake manifold, so I would rather not wrap a chain around that.

Also, I am reading some 5 speed swap threads to get an idea of how to remove the auto shift linkage, but not having much luck

Auto shift linkage is the easiest part, just disconnected the rod that connects to the selector knob up top, but disconnect the rod from the trans side.

Their is another lift point by the starter on the block. I use old seat belts when I take motors out, Never use chains. It's been such a long time since I did my 5 speed swap, I think you just disconnect the gear selector from the driver side of the trans.

        Why never use chains?

Why do you say not to use chains? I've never seen anyone use anything but chains.

So has anybody removed their m20 without a load leveler? Any advice?

It seems if you put the back of the transmission on a creeper, and have the front on jackstands, that you can get the engine out using only the front lift point

I've done it, but don't really care for doing it that way. Your putting a lot of weight on that point. And keep in mind you will bend the shit out of your lift hook. But it does work, just use your head and don't do anything unsafe.

Andew... I don't think you have the capabilities to do this, just save up the money and pay a local shop. This isn't going to be like anything you've experienced before. I mean, you have had some trouble with some pretty basic stuff already and this is a lot more intense and in-depth.

That being said, im sure you'll try it anyway so good luck, take things slow and use your head.

Go ahead and loosen the crankshaft bolt. It's much easier when the engine's still in the car.
You can also drop the engine out the bottom onto a pallet with wheels. Put the car up on jack stands, use hoist to hold engine, remove bolts from subframe (disconnect everything else the same as if pulling from above), lower engine and tranny onto pallet.

This is how I pulled my s52 from the wrecked m3 I bought. Dropped it, then rolled the whole assembly forward and out of the car.

Ill see how hard it is to get to the rear lift point when the time comes. But if it is the size I think it is, how do I connect the chain to it?

I'm not doing this alone. I have help from my friends, one of which has pulled quite a few engines. It will likely take me a while, but I know I can do it

I would consider removing the intake manifold. It makes reaching that rear lift point way easier. Also consider using straps. The engine is not all that heavy.

Why are you pulling your engine?
The first car I ever rode in was an e30
