I have some advice, don't post a starter question in the general discussion forum. KTHX

Have you run the starter on a bench yet?

I have seen them grind from load, where the starter's motor would grind because it couldnt take load - now, I dont think that is happening here because it's two starters and one is fairly new. Can you get a set of calipers in to measure the distance between the block and wheel?

I can't see the starter mounting as being the problem when suing the original starter. Thus I'd say the problem is in the bell housing. The correct assembly order is flywheel, spacer, and then flex plate. It would be pretty obvious if the flywheel for a manual transmission was in backwards, but it seems to me you could get the flywheel for an auto in backwards.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Flywheel teeth are oriented the correct way

I honestly don't understand how the order is flywheel then spacer. That would make the flywheel closer to the engine. Right?

I will measure distance between engine and flywheel. Can somebody measure theirs too so we can compare?

According to realoem the correct order is flywheel, spacer, flexplate.

I was careful to select an auto. Have look at part 11 it says it is for a 4HP22, you would expect to have the clutch there if it was a manual. If it is not like your car, hopefully i've given you an idea where to look.

are you sure the starters are the correct ones? or even the spacers flywheel ect are the correct ones? if so then you need to confirm everything is in right order. what motor have you swapped?
